The volunteer opportunity below is a request from an educator for you to interact with his or her classroom. The interaction is virtual so as long as you have a good internet connection and computer or device with a camera, you can participate from anywhere. The goal of the interaction is to bring real world application, professional experience and relevance to what the educator is teaching. Once you accept the request for one of the dates proposed by the educator, Nepris will provide support and next steps to help you prepare and make sure you are successful. You can also highlight this experience to strengthen the volunteer section of your LinkedIn profile.
Volunteer Virtual Classroom Speaker (Speaker Needed: (female preferred) in STEM field for Verizon’s STEM Camp at Roane State Community College Cumberland Campus – Crossvillle TN)-architecture
Description
The Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Camp program for rural middle school campers, primarily girls - where they’ll learn design thinking, 3D printing, augmented reality & virtual reality, electronics & coding, Artificial Intelligence & Robotics, United Nations Sustainability Goals and social entrepreneurship. Designed to create a more diverse pipeline for future careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields.
For this program each camper is offered an immersive STEM experience during a three-week summer camp followed by sessions offered once a month throughout the coming school year.

Campers** will come prepared with some questions to your session.
- Did you have career role models in your childhood? Who are/were they?
- What did you think your career would be at age 10, at age 15, and at age 20?
- What do you use in your job now that you once thought you would never use?
- Name a moment where you struggled but somehow figured it out.
- What’s a good day at work look like?
- As a best practice speakers should tailor the conversation to middle school campers. Consider their interests and perspective regarding technology, pop-culture, sports, games etc.
Expected Outcomes
We are looking for speakers to share their “career Journey” with the campers including the following:
- Background
- Current role at work
- Advice for pursuing a career in STEM or your field
Please Follow The Time Allotted Agenda Listed Here- (5 min) introduce yourself to the classroom of students
- Briefly tell them your role at work; remember not to use acronyms or titles, but rather explain your role

Expected Outcomes
The middle school campers are from a rural area in Tennessee between Knoxville and Nashville, Crossville TN, and surrounding areas. Many are not aware of careers not represented by local businesses. This is an opportunity to expose them to different careers and areas of the country and world.
