At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences.
We are looking for a skilled and motivated Firmware Engineering Manager to join our team, whose mission is to design, build, and test prototype systems for future consumer VR and AR experiences. We are specifically looking for a candidate with a broad set of experiences, including deep embedded system knowledge, a passion for working on new hardware, and strong leadership skills. You are comfortable working with a wide variety of hardware devices, working with a team to rapidly deliver reliable, high performance firmware. Your primary role will be split between supporting a small team of developers and providing technical leadership on a variety of prototyping efforts. The successful candidate will possess experience setting cross-organizational priorities and the ability to work with a team of researchers with tolerance for a high degree of ambiguity. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Lead Firmware Engineering activities and provide leadership and guidance to your team members.
  • Collaborate in a team environment across multiple product focused, research, and engineering disciplines, making the architectural tradeoffs required to rapidly deliver firmware solutions.
  • Understand, develop, and implement firmware on micro-controllers, leverage peripherals, manage power consumption, support boot loaders, and schedule real-time tasks (RTOS).
  • Build software development processes that allow for rapid development and experimentation while maintaining a high quality product.
Minimum Qualification
  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of management experience and 5+ years of experience on firmware development.
  • Proven track record in building or developing a team of engineers.
  • Experience with embedded processors architecture and boot mechanism, interrupt priorities, and configuring peripherals such as USB, SPI, MIPI CSI/DSI, I2C, UART, GPIO, PWM etc.
  • Experience with software design and programming in C/C++ for development, debugging, testing and performance analysis.

Preferred Qualification
  • Experience with one or more of the following:
  • Experience with Linux/Unix, preferably direct experience with embedded Linux distributions.
  • Hardware debugging, clock-level issues, bridges, delays, interrupts, clock gating, polling, power consumption, etc.
  • Experience designing experiments to diagnose embedded hardware and firmware problems.
  • Experience leading cross functional teams to execute product development on schedule.
  • Experience maximizing performance of resource constrained systems.
