Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.
As a Research Intern in Human-Computer Interaction at Facebook Reality Labs Research, you will conduct cutting-edge research that will define the future of how people interact with digital technologies. You love applying your innovative problem solving skills to novel interaction problems that push the boundaries of the state-of-the-art. You are energized by fast-paced and dynamic research, and thrive in a collaborative, positive, and team-oriented environment.Join a world-class team experimenting with bold ideas in human-computer interaction, including interaction techniques, predictive modeling, adaptive user interface personalization, user input disambiguation, augmented reality/virtual reality, sensors and hardware prototyping, eye tracking, haptics, audio, graphics, computer vision, user-centered machine learning, cognitive science, psychophysiology, and perceptual psychology.Work alongside expert researchers, designers, and engineers to create the technology that makes AR pervasive and universal. Tackle problems related to developing novel input techniques for complex interactions, modeling interaction intent, designing interfaces for system uncertainty disambiguation, and/or personalizing the system based on user actions. Our internships are sixteen (16) to twenty four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year. This position is based out of Toronto, Canada.
Responsibilities
- Plan and execute cutting-edge research in areas such as: developing novel input interactions, modeling interaction intent, designing adaptive interfaces, and interface personalization -- or develop your own project idea with your supervisor.
- Collaborate with researchers, designers, and engineers across disciplines to solve complex problems and evaluate the effectiveness of developed solutions through user studies.
- Work with leading academic researchers to produce publishable research that appears in top-tier journals or at leading international conferences in the HCI field.
Minimum Qualification
- Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
- Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in the field of human-computer interaction, computer science, cognitive science, neurosciences, artificial intelligence, or related field.
- Demonstrated capacity to develop interaction techniques and research prototypes.
- 2+ years of experience with scientific programming languages such as Python and/or C++/C#
- Proven track record of achieving research results and innovation as demonstrated by first-authored peer-reviewed publications and/or patents.
- Interpersonal skills: cross-group collaboration and cross-culture collaboration.
- Self-starter and independent: capable of leading their own research project.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written: you should be able to articulate your research
Preferred Qualification
- Preferred qualifications will be strongly dependent on the specific research project, but may include some of the following:
- Experience designing and carrying out controlled studies with human participants: quantitative and qualitative data analysis methods.
- Experience developing interactive systems for end users in AR/VR with Unity and C++/C#.
- Experience building models of interaction for real-time interactive scenarios (e.g., gesture recognition, eye tracking, task inference).
- Experience with machine learning (e.g., time-series modeling, deep learning, personalization) and developing in Python with ML Toolkits (e.g., Scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras).
- Experience with digital signal processing and statistical data analysis software (e.g., Jupyter, Pandas, SPSS, R, Matlab).
- Experience with neurophysiological sensing (e.g., EEG, EMG, fNIRS, ECG, PPG, EDA).
- Experience with hardware design and prototyping (3D printing, laser cutting, CNC, electronics etc), sensors and actuators, fabrication methods.
- Experience with haptic devices, design and evaluation of haptic interactions, multimodal feedback design.
- Experience designing psychophysical experiments to investigate multi-sensory integration (audio/visual/haptic).
- Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship
