Job Description
Join an innovative team of technology experts and product visionaries to launch disruptive Augmented Reality (AR) products. Kura patented technology overcomes multiple barriers to the practical widespread adoption of AR. It’s an exciting time at Kura as we gear up to make a high impact with our initial product launch. We are looking for like-minded innovators who thrive in a small team fast-paced environment. Kura is making standalone enterprise and consumer-facing AR glasses and systems with 150-degree field of view, 8K resolution, and 95% transparent eyepiece enabled by proprietary display and optics technology.

Optical Engineer
Kura optical engineer with the responsibility to advance Kura’s patented optical technologies and design of implementation for Kura’s signature product.
Responsibilities
- Design and, optimize optical systems and architecture for Kura’sthe AR product device
- Daily operation using CodeV from day 1, if you have never used Codev, don't bother contacting
- Research multiple optical system designs with optical simulation software, analyze results, build prototypes where needed, evaluate manufacturing possibilities, and select the best product design implementation
- Conceptual experimentation with innovative optical designs is encouraged
- Design and source optical components for a customized display with high-resolution image source and high MTF performance
- Work with manufacturers prototyping (diamond turning, etc.), and production (injection molding, etc.) shops. Integrate feedback into optical optimization for the best design
- Work with the team to assemble prototypes, and test system performance
- Run tolerance analysis on the optical system design, optimizing it for performance, manufacturing, and assembly process
- Generate engineering and manufacturing drawings
- Do stray lights analysis for designs in iterations
- Freeform optical design and optimization
- Diffractive element design
- Multi-element optical system design
- Draft statement of work for a project, consultants, other optical engineers and participate in the project
- Generate client-oriented optical spec, 2D and 3D drawings
- Use tools like VirtualLab Fusion, Lumerical for diffractive, and system simulation and optimization
- This is more an optical design, not an analysis engineer, we are looking for very hands-on candidates
- This is not a management role, is a hands-on and fast speed engineering role
Qualifications
- M.S/Ph.D. in Optics or equivalent working experience
- 6+ years of relevant industry experience including tech lead experience
- Experience in lens design and tolerancing using both glass and plastic optical materials
- Experience with miniaturized optics, and familiarity or experience with body-worn designs.
- Intimate knowledge of optical CAD (CodeV, Zemax, LightTools, VirtualLab, etc.), optimization, programming to model and refine sequential/non-sequential optical systems
- Experience with free-form optical design, and high order optimization using tools like CodeV
- Familiarity or expertise with CodeV macro language and/or other types of programming optimization
- Ability to generate standard drawings, manuals, and CAD files to communicate with manufacturing, make modifications based on manufacturing tolerance, process, factories, and design.
- Experience with designing for performance requirements highly emphasizing MTF, and others including stray light analysis, aberration, geometric distortion, light efficiency, and others.
- Experience working with prototyping and production manufacturers including both domestic and offshore to deliver prototype design units and mass production products
- Good understanding of optomechanical principles and have worked with a mechanical or opto-mechanical engineer to finish an overall optical system
- Familiar with basic diffractive optics design and working principles
- Good understanding of optical performance metric in both simulations and test
- Experience in characterizing the optical performance of prototype systems
- Solid background in applied physics, math
- Innovative and systematic thinker
- Thrive in a fast-paced and lean environment
- Good communicator
- Fast learner for new tools, skills, the information needed or recommended to complete the job
- Experience and expertise in making documentation and state of work what would be shared with collaborators, teammates, new employees
- Previous experience in head-mounted display or semiconductor optical industries would be a big plus
Additional Qualifications (a plus)
- Basic programming languages, i.e. C/C++, Python, Matlab
- R&D ability on new exploring features, and able to come up with design tasks to validate assumptions from the executive or engineering team
- Hands-on optical assembly, testing, calibration, able to assemble optics, lenses, opto-mechanical parts, with necessary control board and firmware
- Basic knowledge of CAD software, ideally Solidworks, or Autodesk
- Experience in optical manufacturing diamond turning, grinding, and injection molding
- Knowledge or background in an optical material, liquid crystal, or spatial light modulators
- Experience with diffractive optics using Virtual Lab or other tools/manufacturing process
- Experience in semiconductor, nano-fabrication, or related industries
- Experience with -overseas manufacturing partners, with potential for on-site visits to offshore optical and product manufacturing facilities
- Experience designing and manufacturing Augmented Reality or Virtual Reality optics
Position
- Full-time employee, or contractor to employee transition, San Francisco Bay Area
