At Facebook FRL, we’re developing the future of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). As our VR Optics Technical Program Manager, you’ll be a critical member of the VR Optics team, developing future optical technology vision, removing barriers to your team’s success, communicating progress to all stakeholders and ensuring the big picture stays in focus while delving into the details on specific technical issues and ensuring successful executions. Responsibilities
  • Partner with optical engineering team on VR lens and optical system development activities from long range strategic planning, optical architecture definition, technology transfer through NPI to mass production.
  • Operate at different levels of abstraction, from high-level strategic planning (technology selection, organizational structure, commercial partnerships, investment) to tactical project management (prioritization, schedule creation, milestone definition and execution, and deliverables management).
  • Breakdown the complexity of deeply technical programs to enable a clear understanding of scope and deliverables to a wider audience of team members and support functions.
  • Evaluate suppliers’ capabilities to meet product requirements, partner with strategic sourcing team to establish a robust and scalable supply chain strategy.
  • Manage projects with suppliers and development partners, from component development initiatives, through productization/commercialization process to NPI builds on multiple VR products in collaboration with Optics, PD, Strategic Sourcing, Quality and Reliability teams.
  • Proactively identify technical, legal, procedural, logistical, and communication issues and drive creative solutions to address them and manage risk.
  • Identify resources needed and work closely with team leaders to maintain full visibility of the project schedule and potential roadblocks.
  • Expect to travel within the APAC region for 10-20% of the time when the travel ban is lifted.
  • Collaborate with product manager and architect, develop technology roadmap to bridge from current product to the next generations of product vision.
Minimum Qualification
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in optical engineering, materials science, engineering, or a similar field.
  • 6+ years experience as a program manager (or related role) leading complex technology development programs.
  • Experience in leading and partnering with international suppliers and contract manufacturers.
  • Experience with new product introduction (NPI) and technology transfer best practice and tools.
  • Experience leading teams through a phased product development lifecycle.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, shipping and ramping consumer electronics product into high volume manufacturing.
  • Experience communicating technical information to non-experts, at all levels of the organization.
  • Experience building, coordinating, and maintaining schedules across multiple teams, and managing shared resources to lead successful technology development programs.
  • Highly skilled in motivating, influencing, and resolving conflict amongst a cross-functional team.
  • A track record of transitioning emerging technologies into consumer products.
  • A communicator with experience synthesizing information into the most salient points to move a team/initiative forward.
Preferred Qualification
  • Experience in imaging systems, mobile phone system, camera modules, contract manufacturer, consumer electronics.
  • Understanding of imaging, polarization and diffractive optics.
  • Understanding of injection molding and cleanroom operation, advanced optical coatings, thin film lamination, or polymer film material.
