At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a talented optical design engineer in the Optical Product Development team. You will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers on the end-to-end product development cycle including concept, design, development, and integration of those optical components or systems. You will also work cross functionally to develop specifications and test methods, perform performance evaluation and work closely with manufacturing partners for prototyping and mass production.

Responsibilities
  • Perform optical design, optimization and performance simulation of components and subsystems of VR optics.
  • Perform tolerance analysis of components and subsystems for DFM/DFA (Design for Manufacturing/Assembly).
  • Work closely with teams within Display&Optics to develop specifications, test and characterization methods, and performance validation of optical components and subsystems.
Minimum Qualification
  • Currently has, or in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in the field of Optical Engineering, Physics or a related technical discipline.
  • Expertise in one of the skills: Optical component and system simulation and modeling, Polarization optics, Imaging/camera optics, Ophthalmic optics design, Human vision system, Stray light molding and analysis.
  • Proficiency in one of optical design software packages (e.g. Zemax, CODE V, LightTools, FRED, ASAP).
  • Interpersonal skills: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration.
  • Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
Preferred Qualification
  • 2+ years of relevant laboratory experience designing optical experiments and optical metrology.
  • Experience working with AR/VR lens and display optics (LCD and OLED).
  • Experience building polarization and diffraction films.
