At Facebook Reality Labs, we’re developing the future of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). As a Technical Program Manager, your job will be figuring out what we need to do to build it. You’ll be a critical member of the Applied Perception Science team, removing barriers to your team’s success, communicating progress to all stakeholders and ensuring the big picture stays in focus while delving into the details on specific technical issues in the domain of perceptual science. Ideal team members have domain expertise in visual/perceptual science, are adaptable and resilient, eager to tackle unfamiliar situations with curiosity and tenacity, and thrive on inspiring and influencing at all levels of the organization.
Responsibilities
- Lead engagements with AR/VR product teams applying research learnings to key product decisions. Partner with research scientists performing fundamental perceptual research.
- Manage projects with suppliers and partners, from statements of work to driving final deliverables in collaboration with support functions such as Operations, Business Development, Legal, and Procurement.
- Operate at different levels of abstraction, from high-level strategic planning (research direction, technology selection, organizational structure, commercial partnerships, investment) to tactical project management (prioritization, schedule creation, milestone definition and execution, and deliverables management).
- Breakdown the complexity of deeply technical programs to enable a clear understanding of scope and deliverables to a wider audience of team members and support functions.
- Drive the execution of the plan and manage the day-to-day activities of the program.
- Proactively identify technical, legal, procedural, logistical, and communication issues and drive creative solutions to address them and manage risk.
- Identify resources needed and work closely with team leaders to maintain full visibility of the project schedule and potential roadblocks.
- Act as the main channel of communication for key formal discussions and decisions that involve technical team leader, support functions (Legal, Business Development, and Procurement) external partners, and other members of the organization.
Minimum Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Vision Science, Color Science, Psychology, Optometry, Optics, or Neuroscience.
- In-depth knowledge of the human visual system.
- 2+ years of experience as a program manager (or related role) leading complex technology development programs.
- Experience leading teams through a phased product development lifecycle.
- Experience communicating technical information to non-experts, at all levels of the organization.
- Experience building, coordinating, and maintaining schedules across multiple teams, and managing shared resources to lead successful technology development programs.
- High EQ with experience motivating, influencing, and resolving conflict amongst a cross-functional team.
- Effective communicator, experience synthesizing information into the most salient points to move a team/initiative forward.
Preferred Qualification
- Graduate degree in Vision Science, Color Science, Psychology, Optometry, Optics, or Neuroscience.
- 6+ years as a program manager with experience shipping consumer electronic products.
- Experience working on the evaluation and engineering of display electronics and controllers.
- Knowledge of standard image quality metrics, and deriving new metrics for novel environments and/or display architectures.
- Knowledge of the complete image processing pipeline, from capture through reproduction through professional experience, publications and/or academic training.
- 3+ years experience in hardware design and prototyping hardware systems to simulate issues with proposed and novel display and hardware architecture.
