As an Optical Engineer, Tech Lead at Facebook AR/VR, you will be responsible for the design, development and productization of innovative precision optical components that are core to delivering transformative experiences for next generation Facebook’s AR products. You will join a team that is working on radically new concepts and approaches required because of new constraints imposed by advanced AR/VR devices. You will develop optical device prototypes and products and establish new process capabilities with supply-chain partners and releasing product sub-systems that are fully hardened for high-volume manufacturing. We are looking for an individual that thrives in thinking outside the box, is able to drive and lead developing and pushing the state-of-the-art of technology and also works well in teams comprising a wide range of disciplines. Based on a strong optical engineering background, solid R&D methodology and a data driven approach, ideal candidates should demonstrate experience through a successful track record of bringing products and technologies from concept into mass production.
Responsibilities
- Lead development of the state-of-the-art solid state, liquid, mechanical, and novel tunable optical device technologies.
- Lead the definition of a technology development roadmap for Facebook’s VR technology product line.
- Perform detailed technology analysis and prepare data driven presentations for cross functional reviews.
- Lead the development, optimization, productization and test the functionality and reliability of these novel technologies.
- Work closely with internal cross-functional teams, program managers and leadership as well as lead external vendors to enable the development and use of new materials, processes, methods and surface finishes for world-class industrial designs.
- Define and execute testing and evaluation of different technologies to determine practical performance limits and drive technology selection.
- Support scaleup and high volume production of components.
- Remove material and integration barriers from the path to commercialization.
Minimum Qualification
- BS in Optical Science, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics or related field with 5+ years experience.
- 5+ years of experience in at least one of the following areas: Liquid Crystal Optics, Polarization Optics, Imaging Optics Design and Manufacturing, Optical Metrology, Wave Optics.
- Experience in at least one optical design software package e.g. Zemax or CODE V.
- 2+ years of technology leadership experience.
Preferred Qualification
- MS or PHD in Optical Science, Optical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics or related field with 5+ years experience.
