Job Description

Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.

The Augmented Reality Hardware team is building products that make it easier for people to connect with the ones they love most. We are a team of world-class experts developing and shipping products at the intersection of hardware, software, and content. Our team has the responsibility for taking breakthrough concepts and delivering them to market at scale. Our AR Prototyping Platforms Team seeks a Mechanical Engineering Manager who has experience in consumer electronics in delivering prototype vehicles to develop and explore new technologies.
The ideal candidate will have a deep background and hands-on experience in mechanical engineering/product design and complex system design. You will be responsible for building up and leading the team of mechanical engineers responsible for the development of the prototyping vehicles for our next generation of augmented reality devices. You will work closely with Electrical Engineers, Optical Engineers, Computer Vision specialists, Automation and Test teams, our assembly technicians and many more. In addition to leadership and management responsibilities, you will contribute to detailed CAD work and ME design reviews, follow parts through manufacturing, and drive assembly of units for evaluation. This role requires an understanding of the interdisciplinary needs of the various teams you will be interacting with. The work will include translating high-level requests and communication into actionable hardware direction, working with key stakeholders to ensure agreement on the proposed solution and generating the necessary documentation to facilitate implementation; such as BOMs, assembly instruction, schedules, and issue trackers. As an expert in your field, you will be in charge of supervising the ME design and architecture of our custom systems - in addition to depth in the ME discipline, you also need to have a broad technical background and have worked on a variety of products, materials, and processes, be comfortable with ambiguity, and work effectively across disciplines. You know when to stress details, how to navigate the trade-offs between speed, robust design and cost.
You will be responsible for the intake of requirements from researchers, engineers, and product managers, you’ll manage program schedules, identify risks and associated mitigation plans, and clearly communicate to program stakeholders. Communication and technical aptitude are critical in this role as you will be a liaison between researchers, mechanical, electrical, and software engineers and you will assist with determining project priorities and feasibility. This is a complex and operationally challenging role that will afford the opportunity to lead the development of technologies that have the potential to change the way humans communicate and interact regardless of distance.
