Are you passionate about building cutting edge, never-done-before Augmented Reality experiences on Niantic's recently announced Lightship Platform? Niantic’s AR team is seeking passionate folks to build mobile, real-time, AR technology and experiences in Unity for iOS and Android. You will be the very first to have access to new AR capabilities, and your work will advance Niantic’s Lightship platform and games to the next generation of AR and wearable devices.

This opening represents multiple Unity related roles at Senior Engineer level and above, with various areas of ownership. Please specify your preferred area of interest in your application.

Responsibilities

AR Mapping App
  • Work closely with computer vision and R&D engineers to build a human-friendly, privacy-centered mapping application.
  • Build and extend Unity apps on the Niantic Lightship Platform for users to explore the world and help build 3D maps of the world.
  • Collaborate with AR mapping backend engineers and researchers on technical designs for spatial queries, efficient client to server communication and high availability services.
  • Debug sophisticated projects built on Unity.
  • Understand mobile app development, including app store requirements.

AR Platform Developer Kit
  • Work closely with computer vision and R&D engineers to build performant and elegant APIs and tools for the latest AR features.
  • Work closely with game teams and internal developers to gather API and usage feedback as well as help shape future AR experiences.
  • Debug sophisticated projects built on Unity.
  • Native Specialty: Develop C++ on mobile Android & iOS.
  • Unity Editor Specialty: Develop custom Unity inspectors & tools.

AR Game Prototyper
  • Design and implement prototypes for Niantic’s newest AR Lightship Platform Unity APIs.
  • Work closely with AR game teams to accelerate adoption of AR features.
  • Document your findings to guide developers through the standard methodologies of using Niantic’s AR Lightship Platform.
Qualifications
  • 5-10 years of professional experience building 3D games, applications, or developer SDKs.
  • Experience with Unity and C# development.
  • Experience with cross-platform development and low-compute, low-memory mobile systems.
  • Collaboration with other engineers, product managers, QA, and other departments to ensure code and technology meets internal standards.
Plus If...
  • 2+ years of AR/VR development experience.
  • Experience with ARKit / ARCore.
  • Experience working in a multi-person game studio.
  • Experience developing in C++ for mobile, embedded or console devices. (AR Platform Developer Kit)
  • Experience building native plugins in Unity or other game engines. (AR Platform Developer Kit)
  • Experience in UX Design / ergonomics. (AR Game Prototyper & AR Mapping App)
  • Experience building shaders. (AR Game Prototyper & AR Mapping App)
