Facebook Reality Labs is inventing the technologies needed for future augmented reality and virtual reality products by performing breakthrough research in contextual AI, computer vision, optics, eye tracking, human-computer interaction, machine learning, and mixed reality that will create the foundation for groundbreaking AR and VR experiences.Our team, whose mission is to invent and develop new technologies for interacting with AR and VR devices, is looking for a Research Communications Program Manager to help us share the vision for our work within our team, to internal partners, and out to the world. We are looking for a candidate with experience owning narrative strategy across a large, distributed, cross-functional team -- someone who can make sure everyone on the team knows what great work is being done and how their own work fits into the larger research vision. This person will also build relationships with other teams across Facebook, including external communications and PR, identifying and aligning goals in partnership between research leads and FB communications leads and developing a strong roadmap of external communications beats to accomplish those objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Work with research program leads and, as key point of contact, with the Facebook external communications team to develop a strategy and roadmap for communicating the research teams’ work. Drive alignment on that strategy with key partners and leaders, proactively identifying and mitigating potential setbacks and keeping key partners appraised on progress and status.
  • Develop and execute a communications channel strategy for what to share where, and why: all-hands meetings, internal posts, newsletters, external blog posts, conference presentations, research papers, or other channels. Program and maintain a team editorial calendar, to ensure a consistent rhythm of outbound communications to support business priorities.
  • Learn about and evangelize our groundbreaking work by working directly with research and engineering leaders to develop stories and documents for an audience of partner teams within Facebook as well as members of the research team. Work with team leads to write stories about and updates on their projects.
  • Autonomously own and drive communication improvements within the team and with partners, and represent dependencies, deliverables, needs, and reasons behind decisions to team leadership.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor and partner to the research directors and other organizational leaders to ensure communications excellence is reflected in organizational plans, processes, and strategies.
Minimum Qualification
  • 5+ years experience in communications, community management, technical writing, or journalism at a tech company or research organization.
  • Demonstrated experience owning public relations or external communications strategy for consumer electronics or applied research.
  • Experience with and interest in technical and scientific storytelling to a broad audience. Experience producing documents and presentations that communicate technical and scientific concepts to both experts and non-experts.
  • Experience developing and driving a communications strategy and roadmap, aligning with partners across teams and disciplines.
  • Interpersonal skills, including relationship building and collaboration within a diverse, cross-functional team.

Preferred Qualification
  • Experience with ghostwriting, for example articles or social media posts.
  • Degree in communications, technical writing, journalism, political science, or a relevant scientific or technical field.
  • Demonstrable excellence in storytelling, especially digital storytelling in a technical context.
  • Experience writing for a global audience and knowledge of accessibility requirements.
  • Community management or public relations experience for scientific research, video games, virtual reality, or augmented reality development.
