Job Description
Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.
Facebook Reality Labs is dedicated to the research and development required to bring virtual and augmented reality to billions of people around the world. We aspire to a vision of social VR and AR, where people are able to interact with each other across distances in a way that is indistinguishable from in-person interactions. We’re now seeking a talented firmware engineer to accelerate the progression of low-friction, authentic social presence in virtual reality. In our current pipeline, a multitude of sensing components, including image sensors, microphones, inertial measurement units, are installed on prototype headsets or similar apparatus in order to collect a rich suite of information that reflects the user’s physical state. This information is then processed by our state-of-the-art algorithms to allow for a computational representation of the user to be captured, transferred and reconstructed, all without the burden of a cable. All of these peripherals need to be controlled by embedded systems of our design, and it would require the support of this firmware engineer. The ideal candidate for this position shall be familiar with the embedded software stack, principles of operations for various sensors and microcontrollers, industry-standard communication protocols, real-time operating systems; a working knowledge of electrical engineering is appreciated, and background in wireless communication, sensory synchronization would be a bonus. The ultimate goal is to function in a multidisciplinary team with fellow engineers and researchers to deliver holistic system-level solutions that would achieve photorealistic telepresence.
Responsibilities
- Develop for embedded systems based on requirements formulated by system designers
- Define and implement interfaces for embedded software to host operating systems
- Bring-up, diagnose and propose for improvements for electrical systems
- Work with suppliers to secure technical information for embedded operations
- Communicate and document firmware behaviors to multidisciplinary teams
Minimum Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in fields related to computer science and engineering
- 5+ years of experience using C/C++ for software development with version control
- Familiarity with peripherals such as I2C, SPI, I2S, UART, MIPI, USB 3.1, and PCIe
- Hands-on experience interfacing with scientific and industrial sensing systems
- Basic understanding of the electrical compositions on which embedded systems are built
- Skills to use diagnostic equipment such as oscilloscope, signal generator, multi-meter
- Proven technical communication skills and a habitual documentation mindset
- Exposure to real-time operating systems and ARM Cortex-M series processors
Preferred Qualification
- Experience with FPGA high-speed RTL design
