At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for an experienced and self-motivated Optical Engineering Manager to lead one of the best optical development teams in the world. Your team will design and develop imaging optics or display systems for FRL Hardware products. All of your work will change the landscape of capabilities of virtual reality and augmented reality hardware through a close collaboration with both internal and external partners.

Responsibilities
  • Manage, build and mentor a world-class optical engineering team for imaging optics or display system product and technology development.
  • Lead the team in developing new technologies, prototypes and drive the technology and product roadmap.
  • Develop a forward looking technology shelf and dive into the new areas.
  • Lead the team in executing optics design and development for consumer AR and VR hardware products from concept proposal to mass production.
  • Hands-on involvement in the development of imaging optics through design, data analysis, validation and factory support.
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams on the integration of optical components into modules and consumer hardware products.
  • Work closely with internal and external partners to identify, define, develop, test, and deploy state-of-the-art solutions for both machine perception and photographic imaging optics.
  • Establish diversified industry partnerships to facilitate imaging optics product and technology development.
  • Champion engineering excellence and a data driven culture.
  • Ideal candidate is someone who can dive deep in the details while also operating at a higher level of abstraction, connecting the dots, understanding and articulating the strategy.
  • Up to 25% domestic and international travel required.
Minimum Qualification
  • At least 3 years of people management experience in consumer electronics or relevant product development.
  • Extensive experience and knowledge on optics, optical systems and optical metrology.
  • Interpersonal skills to work across teams.
  • Communication skills.
  • Logical and creative thinking experience.
  • Energy and experience driving to work in a startup environment.
  • BS degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related technical discipline with 10+ years of experience or advanced degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline with 5+ years of experience.

Preferred Qualification
  • Knowledge in both sequential and non-sequential optical design software is preferred (e.g. Zemax, Code V, LightTool, FRED and/or ASAP).
  • Expertise in several of the skills listed below is required and familiarity with all of the skills:
  • Image quality evaluation.
  • Optical metrology and characterization.
  • Stray light modeling and analysis.
  • Camera module or lens testing and characterization.
  • Optical metrology development from concept to system validation.
  • Opto-mechanical design and simulation using Nx, SOLIDWORKS or other CAD tools.
  • Test automation using LabVIEW, MATLAB or Python.
