MKS' Optical Solutions Business (OSB) in Irvine, CA is automating various assembly, alignment and test processes in optical, electro-optical and opto-mechanical assembly applications and is looking for an Test Automation Engineering Graduate Intern.


We are looking for an exceptional Test Automation Engineering Graduate Intern who can…

  • Areas where improvements can be added will be discussed with the tutoring engineer(s) and tasks will be assigned according to skills and experiences in an open discussion.
  • Preliminary examples of tasks are:
  • Create a Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) for production personnel to record production data instead of entering data directly into an excel file (screen bad data).
  • Communicate and interface a power meter, motion controller or other industrial equipment to an industrial computer.
  • Interface the test station with an SQL database to save the data that has been recorded.
  • Create a GUI and implement logic to automate interfaced devices for assembly, alignment or testing. For instance: if optical power is >1 Watt, then move motorized stage #2 by 1.53mm, then ask production personnel to enter serial number, record all data into an SQL database.
  • Create GUI to visualize data from the SQL database or excel files so production data can be compared with historical data in real time for Statistical Process Control (SPC).
  • The intern may also be needed to help in documenting some opto-mechanical assembly, alignment or test procedures and can be asked to perform some hands-on activities: setup a test fixture, connecting a computer or other devices to a test or alignment station…


What will you bring to the team, along with your curiosity is:

  • Student must be pursuing a valid graduate degree program in which he/she will graduate with a Master/Ph.D. Degree in 2022 or 2023 in Optical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Industrial Automation, Physics or similar field, at an accredited college or university.
  • Solid knowledge and experience of a programming language. LabVIEW preferred but alternative languages can be considered: Python, Visual Basic, C++, etc… to create GUIs and manipulate excel or SQL databases.
  • Knowledge of Six Sigma, Statistical Methods and/or SPC a plus.
  • Must have proficient computer skills and familiar with Microsoft Office programs (Word, PowerPoint and Excel). Knowledge of advanced software such as Tableau is a plus.
  • Possess critical thinking and analytical skills with good communication skills
  • Must be a self-starter, resourceful and reliable, work both as a team member or independently and proactively complete assigned activities on time.
