As Head of Oculus Studios, you will be responsible for driving VR adoption and growing the VR ecosystem with high quality games for Quest, Quest 2, and Rift headsets. You’ll oversee a first party studio organization with three internal studios (Beat Games, Sanzaru, and Ready at Dawn) as well as a portfolio of large, triple-A second party game projects based on top global game and entertainment IP. You’ll manage the leaders and teams that are building, launching, and running VR games based on internal brands like Beat Saber and Echo VR. You’ll also work with external partners on top tier IP including Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, Medal of Honor, and several other beloved franchises. Facebook Reality Labs will be looking to your organization to deliver large, complex VR game projects on time, on budget, and to the highest level of quality. You’ll also be expected to keep compelling content flowing into your live game services.You’ll be working with talented studio heads and executive producers who are accomplished creative and team leaders with track records of success. Your mission will be to empower them to do their best work, clear away obstacles, solve problems, and facilitate collaboration with the FRL cross-functional teams your organization needs in order to succeed (including Marketing, Communications, Legal, Partnerships, Finance, HR, Platform, Data Science, and others).Coming into this role, you will have had a successful career managing game development projects at scale. You will have had experience leading an organization with multiple game studios or large teams. You will be able to get the best out of strong leaders running studios and big second party projects. You’ll have the skills to manage partnerships with some of the biggest game publishers and entertainment companies in the world. You’ll know how to work with top tier brands and franchises, delivering high quality games that add brand equity to the franchises they are based on rather than exploiting them. You will have demonstrated the ability to manage teams running live operations for game services with long arcs (measured in years).
Responsibilities
- Lead our first party studio organization, which includes Beat Games, Sanzaru, and Ready At Dawn, in building, launching, and running top quality VR games like Beat Saber and Echo VR.
- Oversee a portfolio of large scale, triple-A VR games based on top global IP being built by external partners (including internal development teams at large game publishers and independent developers building games in partnership with licensors). You’ll need to be able to lead through influence with these partners.
- Manage against the twin mandates to drive VR adoption and grow the VR ecosystem. Driving VR adoption means generating anticipation and excitement around major triple-A releases, inspiring consumers to buy VR headsets. Growing the VR ecosystem means generating revenue from the games that are launched, delivering a good return to your licensors and partners so that they feel good about further investments in VR.
- Be a servant leader for your team of high powered studio heads and executive producers, helping them to do their best work by empowering them to succeed, clearing obstacles and solving problems, and facilitating collaboration with cross-functional teams including Marketing, Communications, Legal, Partnerships, Finance, HR, Platform, Data Science, Policy, Privacy, and others.
- In partnership with the Content Operations team, continue evolving the internal Game Development Framework that we use to guide, manage, and influence the development of large multi-year entertainment software projects. Lead your teams through the key cross-disciplinary gate reviews and check-ins that build on each other to give projects the foundation for launching on time, on budget, and to the highest standards of quality.
- Work with your Studios leadership team to define and drive product and portfolio strategy, including collaboration with our Marketing team to define the right product mix for the future, engagement with our Partnerships team to reach out to potential licensors and publishers about future projects in order to strike deals that fill out slates of triple-A games for future years, and coordination across the rest of FRL to make sure that overall strategic priorities are reflected in the Studios slate.
- Shepherd large projects through our internal greenlight process and then the company approval process for major deals.
- Collaborate with Finance and Business Operations to prepare and submit budget and headcount plans as part of the company’s annual planning process.
- Manage your budget responsibly to deliver results.
Minimum Qualification
- Experience overseeing multiple game studios or large teams working on high quality games.
- Demonstrated experience managing the game development process at scale. A solid understanding of the entertainment software development life cycle, tools, and processes from pre-production through to launch and into live services.
- Proven experience working with intellectual property and brands, as well as collaborating with the partners that own these brands.
- A track record of delivering high quality, triple-A products.
- Demonstrated expertise in overseeing live operations for game services, including a steady flow of new content that drives key metrics like engagement, retention, and monetization.
- Experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams in a larger company setting, like Marketing, Communications, Data Science, Legal, Partnerships/BD, etc.
- Experience managing senior leaders like studio heads and executive producers who are accomplished in their own right. Experience in getting the very best out of talented leaders who carry the creative vision for their products and teams.
- Demonstrated experience defining and driving product and portfolio strategy and strategic execution.
- P&L owner for a business unit that has operated at scale.
- Proven experience working with independent developers, licensors, and other partners. Experience in managing these collaborations with finesse, inflecting product progress through influence and leveraging relationship equity to get the best outcome for all parties.
- Proven experience in partnering with Marketing and other key enabling organizations to take big products to market successfully.
- Bachelor’s Degree.
