At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Packaging and Reliability Engineer with specialization in Electronics Packaging to join our team, whose mission is work with a broad range of multidisciplinary research to advance the state-of-the-art for wearable interaction devices. We are specifically looking for a candidate with experience in consumer, wearable, or military grade electronics packaging fundamentals, with a focus on high density electronics integration of electronics into multi-chip-modules; and who can work with a team of researchers who are developing soft and flexible electronics systems. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.
Responsibilities
- Frame, scope, plan, and execute multidisciplinary applied research, specifically focused on manufacturing processes and packaging for wearable interaction devices that is aligned with broader research strategy
- Lead design efforts for full-stack packaging and assembly of wearable electronic multi-chip-module systems with a focus on manufacturability and reliability and collaborate with researchers and process engineers to prototype wearable AR/VR interaction devices
- Establish and disseminate design rules and best practices for flex circuit design, flex printed circuit assembly, Printed Circuit Board Assembly (PCBA), handling of thin die and panels, encapsulation, molding, and other packaging
- Drive engagement with vendors, academic, and industry labs to advance research in relevant areas
Minimum Qualification
- BS or higher in mechanical engineering (or equivalent experience/degree)
- 4+ years of experience in the package and reliability engineering of consumer, wearables, and/or ruggedized electronics
- 4+ years of experience in PCB fabrication and assembly: wafer-level packaging, multi-chip-modules development or similar advanced packaging experience such as 3D and 2.5D integration
- Experience with flex circuit and PCBA fabrication and assembly equipment and processes
- Experience in Design for Manufacturing (DFM) for PCB and PCBA or similar technologies
Preferred Qualification
- Experience in the domain of technology transfers from process development, pilot prototype manufacturing, to scalable manufacturing
- Experience in meeting regulatory, certification, and industry performance standards or related areas
- Strong communication and personal management skills
- 2+ years of experience in delivering high reliability and high yield prototypes and scaling manufacturing toward mass production
- Familiarity with common human factors, safety and regulatory, and reliability engineering
