Facebook is a world leader in the design of augmented reality systems. We are currently seeking an innovative Advanced Materials Researcher with a background in inorganic and/or hybrid materials scientist with a passion to develop new materials for consumer near-to-eye displays at our research and development labs. You will work on driving a new materials-based solution to enable optical architectures focused on new display systems leveraging nano-structured optics. This is a full-time position and requires an advanced degree in chemistry, chemical and materials science and engineering or similar, with a strong background in semiconductor, patterning, and optical materials.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the new materials development for nano-structured optics.
  • Synthesize and formulate novel inorganic and hybrid materials for a wide range of AR/VR applications.
  • Establish relationships with tool and material suppliers enabling pilot-scale fabrication.
  • Deliver stable materials and processes enabling state-of-the-art AR Optics.
  • Translate Optical Design requirements into appropriate chemistry.
  • Build collaborative relationships both internally and externally to support research initiatives.
  • Act as the Research Staff owner for internal work, managing external collaborations and development activity towards project deliverables.
  • Collaboratively work with the broader research community to advance new technology elements with a focus on new processes, tools, and materials enabling differentiation in our optical system design space.
  • Engage cross-functionally with other researchers and engineers in Facebook AR/VR to develop concepts that advance the entire product pipeline including hardware, software, integration, infrastructure, and applications.
Minimum Qualification
  • BS Degree in Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Chemical and Materials Science and Engineering, or equivalent work Experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in inorganic nanoparticle synthesis, sol-gel chemistries, metal-oxide nanoparticles, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).
  • 3+ years of knowledge of materials and processes for semiconductor, patterning and optical applications.
  • Familiarity with basic patterning techniques for fabrication of nanostructured optics.
  • Experience in successfully managing external engagements to deliver custom materials for a given application.
  • Experience in cross-group and cross-culture collaboration.
  • Experience working in a cleanroom environment.
  • Experience coordinating experiments cross-functionally with the design and cleanroom staff.
  • Experience with structured problems solving, and standard industrial risk assessments.

Preferred Qualification
  • PhD degree with five years of industrial experience in chemistry, inorganic chemistry chemical and materials science and engineering, or a similar field.
