As an Optical Design Validation Engineer (DVE) within Facebook Reality Labs, you will play a critical role in bringing AR to our customers. You will be embedded with the AR/VR Display & Optics team working with a cross-disciplinary engineering team (electrical, mechanical, optical) along with in-region partners and vendors. You will be responsible for validating the optical performance of AR displays, focusing on ensuring quality in the wide range of real-world use cases.
Our ideal candidate will use their optical engineering knowledge and creativity to measure and test Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that have never been tested in consumer electronics. Leveraging excellent technical communication skills and hands-on prototyping skills, they’ll work to validate designs, communicate results and collaborate on design solutions.
Responsibilities
- Develop a deep understanding of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to be tested for all Oculus products by collaborating across different disciplines and technology teams
- Identify system interactions and design factors which impact these KPIs and design robustness, develop objective methods to test and track progress. Examples of this are: Sensor positions, dynamic deflections of critical components, ergonomics, mechanical stability, and optical positioning
- Build and execute test plans
- Design precision test fixtures to meet strict requirements
- Work with internal fabrication and prototyping teams to build test equipment in our labs
- Direct external vendors to fabricate additional test equipment and perform testing as needed
- Report results to a broad audience and work with design teams to improve performance
- Data analysis of large sets of optical data
- Manage working partnerships with hardware engineers and/or vendors
- Travel upwards of 25%, domestic and international, to support builds, meet with suppliers, and work with a multi-site hardware team
Minimum Qualification
- Masters degree in imaging science, optical science, physics or equivalent experience
- Experience with digital imaging systems and optical performance evaluation
- 4+ years of experience working on image quality evaluation and management for imaging sensors, digital cameras or other imaging systems
- Experience with designing and implementing image quality test protocols, performing data analysis and generating reports
- Experience with programming in Python, C++ or other equivalent programming languages
- Experience providing technical contributions to innovation-driven product design teams
Preferred Qualification
- Experience in optical components performance testing and evaluation
- Experience designing test equipment and following validation best practices
- Experience working with EE, ME, FW, SW, and other cross-functional teams
- Experience working to deliver in a new product category
