Scope of Position

The Learning & Development Consultant is an expert in learning and technology who supports The James Cancer Hospital in the development, design, utilization, and evaluation of educational processes and resources that incorporate the latest technological advances while keeping learning objectives and project goals in the forefront. This position functions as a member of the James Operations Improvement team to promote educational strategies and innovations that increase learner engagement and improve learning outcomes and is a split appointment with the Health Sciences Library (HSL) and EdTech Incubator (ETI). This position sits in the James Operations Improvement cost center. This position will be well-versed in extended reality (XR) education solutions, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR).


Position Summary

The Learning & Development Consultant supports administrators, organizational leaders, educators and content experts in the development of educational activities to facilitate workplace learning. This position supports faculty and staff to promote educational strategies and innovations that increase learner engagement and improve learning outcomes. Core functions of the Learning & Development Consultant include (1) consulting with faculty and staff to develop and manage XR modules, guided learnings, multimedia, and digital and print materials to support learning; (2) collaborating with faculty and staff to pilot new educational technologies and instructional approaches using XR and other multimedia technologies; (3) providing technical support and training for XR modules technologies; and (4) designing, implementing, and evaluating faculty and staff development programs related to XR and other multimedia technologies. The primary work schedule is Monday-Friday, 8AM to 5PM, with expansion of hours and evening/night and week-end work as necessary.


Minimum Qualifications

For Hire:

  • Master's degree in Instructional Design, Education, Computer Graphics, Human-Computer Interaction, or Digital Arts or related field or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Game Design, Digital Media, or Interactive Media or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with an emphasis on extended reality technology; experience in XR simulation development; experience applying XR skills to the field of healthcare preferred, but not required.
  • Demonstrated abilities:
  • In computer graphics, 3D modeling, programming, user experience (UX) design, and interactive development
  • To translate traditional instructor-led classroom material into formats using state-of-the-art innovation and technology.
  • To apply adult learning theory in design of large-scale learning solutions, including classroom, eLearning, job aids, role-based curriculum, performance support, etc.
  • To translate traditional instructor-led classroom material into formats using state-of-the-art innovation and technology.
  • To assess and utilize a variety of educational software programs knowledge of Captivate preferred.
  • Produce a variety of different media elements (print graphics, web graphics, video, etc. using design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite and virtual reality simulation development software)
