In this role, you will join the Display and Photonics Research team responsible for the research and development of novel display and optical materials, components, and systems for AR and VR applications. You will lead the effort of exploring new concepts in imaging display or photonics technologies for potential use in AR and VR optic systems. You will be responsible for working with other teams to provide proof of concept viability and demonstration to product teams for future commercialization.

Display and Photonics Research Manager Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of research scientists and lead research and development in the field of photonics and displays, including designing and testing optical engines for AR glasses, compact illumination solutions and advanced displays.
  • Lead team collaboration on a system by owning research on sub-components. Lead paper studies, prototypes and characterization.
  • Drive external research partnership to create and develop novel concepts and deliver high-quality design and/or prototyping to push technology maturity for AR/VR
  • Lead innovative thinking and internal incubation process for new ideas. Propose solutions to address open research questions and product challenges.
  • Create and maintain good documentation (documents, presentations, technical reports, models, etc.) about experiments, IP, prototypes, optical setups, and project management.
  • Active in key events and conferences, stay connected with the internal and external community, be an ambassador of the broader team mission and culture.
  • Adapt at working in a fast-paced, ambiguous, and flexible environment to deliver solutions that far outperform the state-of-the-art.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in optics, physics, optoelectronics, electrical engineering, or a related field
  • n-depth knowledge of laser and microLED technology, silicon photonics integrated circuit. Proven background in optics and proven experience working on complex optical systems. considerable technical skills in display electronics and systems engineering.
  • 7+ years of work experience in technology innovation, designing and testing hardware in the consumer electronics field,
  • Demonstrated experience in incubating ideas in consumer electronics research and seeing them through to volume commercialization.
  • Demonstrated experience executing on prioritizing analysis to weed out concepts quickly and focus on paths with high potential and successful implementation.
  • Effective presentation and communication skills, effective interpersonal skills in cross-group and cross-culture collaboration.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct working experience in AR/VR research and development
  • 10+ years of technology in display technologies, electronics, or optics
  • Established relationships with display and optics suppliers, research institutes, and material vendors.
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring others in the team
