Overview
This position is responsible for managing the purchasing team in procuring a wide variety of raw materials, equipment, components and services in line with specified levels of quality, delivery, price and total cost. The Purchasing Manager will ensure that all purchase orders are managed, documented and administered in compliance with company procedures and policies.
This person will be responsible for buying and planning, inventory, supply chain and sourcing and will participate in the strategic direction of the organization, helping to ensure that purchasing activity is effectively and efficiently integrated into business operations.
The Purchasing Manager must be hands on; willing to perform, as necessary, the daily tactical requirements within the group and be capable of working on problems of diverse scope where analysis of situations or data requires evaluation of related factors. They will exercise judgment within “best of” supply chain practices and defined company practices and policies; select or develop methods and techniques for obtaining optimal solutions and meet team and company objectives. The Purchasing Manager is a leader within the Supply Chain organization; striving to meet and exceed external and internal customer expectations and committed to continuous improvement across operations and the supply chain. The position manages a team and supports multiple business units.
Position is located in Somerset, NJ, and requires 3 days/week in the office.
Responsibilities
- Ensure systems, processes, plans and policies of the company are followed and leveraged to ensure effectiveness and efficiency; utilize MRP and other planning strategies, leverage commodity strategies, and ensure all steps in the procurement process are followed with extreme accuracy and care to avoid economic loss and customer dissatisfaction.
- Lead continuous improvement opportunities to improve upon total cost and address issues with supplier performance. Identifies, plans and executes major improvement projects to purchasing processes that increase buyer productivity and automation of routine tasks.
- Actively seeks out and implements, productivity improvements.
- Maintain schedules and manage the life of the purchase order from receipt of requisition, place orders, manage expedites/reschedules/cancellations/past due orders, and acceptances of assigned materials into stock and resolves invoice discrepancies.
- Ensure best of price, lead-time and delivery for assigned material; ensure best of total cost. Negotiate and write contracts as needed to purchase goods and services. Negotiate agreements and contracts to establish a framework for the working client/facilitate the needs of the business relationship, manage supply risk, and meet business objectives.
- Effectively listen and consistently communicate expectations, requirements and issues with suppliers, stakeholders and management across functions and business units and within the supply chain organization.
- Create, maintain, and manage metrics necessary to ensure customer satisfaction and the company’s competitiveness. Identify, analyze and solve supply problems.
- Support corporate goals related to quality, cost, customer service and inventory management. Support the creation and execution of the vision Veeco has for its’ supply chain organization.
- Strengthen team dynamics within the Supply Chain team and across business functions; draw on peers and colleagues to better leverage the team, process flow and serve company needs and objectives.
- Pro-actively coach and inspire teams to achieve higher levels and build on the knowledge and skills of individual team members.
Qualifications
BS degree in Business, Supply Chain, Industrial Engineering or related field and a minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in purchasing and/or supply chain management; or an MS degree and 5 years of related experience is required. At least 2 years of direct supervisory experience required. Experience in a high tech or capital equipment environment is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- APICS or CPM Certification highly desired
- Low-volume/High mix environment experience preferred
- Solid knowledge and understanding of Purchasing Law as it relates to the purchasing function
- Strong understanding of MRP/ERP; preferably SAP (Materials Management Module)
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communications skills
- Strong presentation, problem solving and analytical skills required
- Strong negotiations skills
- Detail-oriented with the ability to work on multiple tasks independently with little direct supervision in a fast-paced environment
