This position will provide Virtual Reality (VR)/Augmented Reality (AR) support to the System Analysis Branch (EV74) and Human Factors Engineering (HFE) team in support of spaceflight and lunar programs. The successful candidate will work in the Virtual Environment Lab (VEL) and use the hardware and software to support human factor assessments of spaceflight and lunar habitation studies. The successful candidate will coordinate and interface with multiple engineering disciplines, system elements, and customers, as well as participate in reviews, meetings, working groups, task teams, and systems/tasks supportability processes and assessments.

The Candidate Will Provide And Perform The Following Tasks

  • Assist in integrating multiple technologies into a cohesive virtual environment for analysis purposes.
  • Assist the team in working with software developers to solve issues between software/hardware being used to perform the VR/AR assessments
  • Develop and expand the usability of the VR/AR environment to study environmental effects of the lunar surface.
  • Update programming tools for various AR/VR platforms.
  • Participate in showcasing the VEL’s capabilities to external customers for future work.
  • Participate in worksite analyses using virtual assessments software such as Process Simulate Human (PSH) to evaluate hardware designs against human systems integration requirements.

Here's What You'll Need

A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, or Robotics, or a degree in a related technical discipline such as Industrial Design, Physics or Mathematics. Typical educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS with at least 10 years of experience in VR/AR.

  • The candidate is required to have:
  • Understanding of how VR/AR is used to help engineering assessments.
  • Knowledge in coding and/or using any of the following software packages:
  • Unity
  • C#
  • Unreal 5
  • Experience in ray traced lighting
  • Experience in physics based modeling and simulation in real time
  • Including relating user interactions to vehicle dynamics in real time
  • Knowledge in or experience using any of the following hardware:
  • Vicon Camera system with Shogun software.
  • HTC Vive VR HMD or other SteamVR connected HMD
  • Microsoft HoloLens 2 or other AR HMD
  • Critical thinking, effective communications, and good problem solving skills.
  • Some leadership experience.
  • Comfortable with technical writing and presentation skills.
  • Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

Desired (presence of one or more of these qualifications will be used as discriminating factors in selecting applicants):

  • Microsoft HoloLens for Augmented Reality capabilities
  • Experience using Siemens’ Process Simulate Human (PSH), or JACK.
  • Familiarity with CAD software such as CREO, SolidEdge, NX, or SolidWorks.
  • Experience developing 3D modeling or animation of human models
  • Familiarity/knowledge of NASA, MIL, or FAA Human Factors standards.
  • An understanding of the NASA systems engineering processes.
  • Experience using Microsoft Mixed Reality Tool Kit and/or Blender

Work Environment:

Physical Requirements

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs facilities (10%).

Equipment And Machines

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance

Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
