Job Description
The Soft Goods Engineering Team develops technical Soft Goods integration solutions across Meta's consumer VR, AR, Smart Glasses, Wearables and Accessories product lines. We work closely with creative, technical and operations partners as we push the boundaries of what is possible in Soft Goods integration.We are seeking a Soft Goods Developer (Development Engineer) to join our growing Soft Goods Engineering team. The ideal candidate will have experience in developing novel Soft Goods constructions through iterative prototyping, leveraging a deep knowledge of textiles (knits, wovens, non-wovens), foams and adhesives, and how to manipulate them in a scale manufacturing environment.This role works closely with Industrial Design and Softgoods Product Design Engineers and Textile Engineers to generate and prove out various construction options for consumer product lines.
Soft Goods Developer Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with ID, SgPD and System PD to generate Softgoods construction ideas, prototype and test them to aid with down selection to production viable solutions.
- Develop methods for prototyping Soft Goods constructions in our Soft Goods Labs which demonstrate their viability from cosmetic, functional and reliability perspective.
- Design and develop tools and fixtures to emulate production processes to guide DFM and ID expectation.
- Develop and maintain a library of approved textile materials, including technical specifications and testing data.
- Communicate basic technical guidance and priorities to vendors, and serve as a key point of contact for vendors throughout the product development process.
- Design and execute testing to satisfy cross-functional partner teams requirements, and facilitate down selection of textile materials.
- Source new vendors to expand our development partners in the US and East Asia.
- Build presentations and reports to aggregate test results and qualitative attributes, and explain technical directions to higher management levels.
- Procure new material samples that support programs and build them into testable formats.
- Provide short time frame support on mini-programs that serve the immediate low volume needs of internal proof of concept and prototyping teams.
- Communicate with vendors regarding timelines, volumes, and technical data, and maintain detailed records of all communications.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Textile Engineering, Softgoods, or equivalent work experience.
- 6+ years of experience in technical textiles and soft goods integration into consumer products.
- 2D and 3D CAD skills sufficient to support prototyping experiences, e.g. proof of concept prototype assemblies, tool and fixture making, exporting for 3D print / laser / zund etc.
- Analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proven communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize competing deadlines.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams, as well as vendors and suppliers.
- Knowledge of product development and scale manufacturing processes.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Expert in 3D and 2D NX.
- +5 years of experience in technical textiles and soft goods integration into consumer electronics or similar products.
- Experience developing soft goods for wearable consumer electronics products.
