At Facebook Reality Labs (FRL), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are currently seeking a Technology manager with expertise in nanofabrication processes and material solutions applied to physical optics and a passion for technology and innovation to join our team, whose mission is to deliver state of the art Waveguide Technologies for consumer near-to-eye displays at our research and development facilities. The position is full-time, requiring experience in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, or similar degree. Candidates must have direct experience working in a nanofabrication environment with semiconductor or photonics tooling and applications. Successful candidates must be comfortable working in a dynamic, cross-functional team and exhibit excellent communication skills.

Waveguide Technology Manager Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a safety-first work environment. Participate, promote, and drive lab-safety initiatives.
  • Manage a team of nanofabrication engineers and scientists responsible for developing advanced optical components- includes implementation and optimization of new processes and materials.
  • Collaborate with the Materials, Design, Metrology, Systems, and Architecture teams to develop a common technology roadmap.
  • Work with your team and partners (internal/external) to define, and push key process performance metrics for both capability and manufacturability.
  • Work cross-functionally with the operations leadership team to identify and drive productivity, workflow system, and infrastructure improvements.
  • Develop and manage external relationships to provide strategic differentiation.
  • Identify and drive process characterization and performance improvements within sector to enable rapid cycles of learning. Drive integrated solution performance.
  • Promote and advance sound engineering disciplines including DOE, statistical analyses, hypothesis testing, and structured problem-solving (8D, fishbone, KT, etc).
  • Perform standard management functions such as conducting performance reviews, establishing individual development plans, and execution of budgetary elements.
  • Promote and apply high standards for diversity and inclusion.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A BS or MS degree in the field of Engineering, Material Science, Optical Sciences, Physics, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of relevant work experience with materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, or physics.
  • In-depth knowledge of nanofabrication processes including lithography, deposition, plasma, and wets processing.
  • Appropriately broad understanding of metrology techniques required to support process development.
  • Fundamental understanding of augmented reality waveguide physics.
  • Understanding of AR display system.
  • Leadership skills and demonstrated knowledge to manage a team of engineers to execute on multiple projects simultaneously and react to shifting priorities to meet business needs and deadlines.
  • People skills with demonstrated knowledge to work effectively and efficiently with diverse teams, customers, internal and external partners.
  • Experience managing one or more external engagements.
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of engineering management experience in a nanofabrication environment.
  • A PhD degree in the field of Engineering, Material Science, Optical Sciences, Physics, or similar with 5+ years of relevant work experience.
  • Deep knowledge of diffractive optics or photonics.
  • Deep knowledge of Augmented Reality display concepts.
  • Advanced knowledge of standard nanofabrication technologies including lithography, etch, deposition, cleans, metrology, and materials.
