Research Engineer - Materials Reliability

Employer

Job Description

At Reality Labs Research (RL-R), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Materials Reliability Research Engineer to join our team, whose mission is to create highly flexible and reliable electronic devices with uncompromised performance. We are specifically looking for a candidate with experience in researching materials reliability within flexible microelectronic devices and solving materials-related reliability problems within electronics stack-ups as well as for someone who can work with a team of researchers who are solving the materials, manufacturing and performance needs for a new paradigm of worn devices. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.

Research Engineer - Materials Reliability Responsibilities:

  • Devise testing plans and direct, with testing organization, reliability testing of coupons, components and sub-systems for wearable integrated electronic devices focused on improving electromechanical, environmental, and chemical-exposure stability, developing reliability testing plans and directing execution of reliability DOEs to create meaningful, statistically significant datasets to inform solutions for partner research programs, balancing between internal and external testing execution for optimal efficiency and effectiveness
  • In collaboration with testing organization, schedule, supervise & delegate team workload, relying on thorough understanding of and familiarity with electrical & mechanical testing requirements, test hardware, firmware, software, sockets, boards, connectors, interfaces required to meet team goals
  • Advise research workstreams regarding materials and process choices within early-stage research efforts. Highlight potential reliability-related issues and develop quick-turn, early-stage reliability or analytical testing to inform hypotheses and solve reliability problems
  • Drive reliability testing operational strategy within testing and characterization labs, including development of new test standards and test infrastructure bring-up, improving operational, data-acquisition and reporting efficiency, balancing internal vs. external test execution, and directing escalation and root cause determination for failures identified within testing
  • Collaborate with research scientists and engineers from broad disciplines to translate complex technology needs into appropriate cross-functional experimental test plans and research directions

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently has a Masters or PhD degree in reliability engineering, materials science, materials engineering, systems engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 3+ years experience in a reliability engineering role focused on reliability improvements for integrated electronic devices, including experience with FMEA, time-to-failure predictions, corrective and preventive action, Fault Tree Analysis, Weibull analysis, Root-cause determination, sustaining reliability development, testing towards ASTM, ISO and IPC standards, data reporting within a statistical software/partial DOE fast-learning environment
  • 3+ years experience performing reliability testing of electronics devices to characterize and improve performance under mechanical fatigue or environmental accelerated life testing and inform on design for reliability through focused DOEs
  • 2+ years hands-on testing experience with various electrical, mechanical and environmental stress testing equipment, including electrical measurements under dynamic strain, tensile testing, damp heat, electromigration testing or with reviewing mechanical & electrical drawings & specifications to ensure hardware meets testing goals
  • 2+ years experience with materials characterization techniques including including SEM/EDS, FIB, CSAM, 2D & 3D X-ray/CT scans, optical microscopy, fractography, XRD, XRF, DSC, TGA or DMA

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Reliability engineering experience for wearable consumer electronics devices which have progressed through a product life-cycle, focused on materials-related reliability under thermal, mechanical, electrical, environmental and chemical exposure stress conditions
  • Reliability and failure mode modeling and simulation expertise, including FEA, computational mechanics and mathematical modeling, preferably with reliability physics-based electronics design tools and with an understanding of the underlying physics of failure and electromechanical design/drawing generation (i.e. with Altium or Cadence)
  • Experience with materials and solving reliability problems common within flexible electronic systems, including interconnects, flexible & stretchable substrates, metallization layers, underfills, thermal materials, encapsulants, ingress protection materials and shielding materials
  • Experience balancing internal and external reliability testing experimentation and failure analysis (FA), including a track-record of leveraging external testing labs or establishing new internal testing capabilities such as new equipment or laboratories
  • Experience with developing reliability programs from ground-up and with a variety of reliability and FA projects spanning from component to systems levels, creating custom test apparatus, fixturing and test plans, defining root cause of failures and driving towards corrective actions required to mitigate future reliability issues and failures
