Job Description
At Meta Reality Labs Research, our goal is to make world-class consumer virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. Come work alongside industry-leading scientists and engineers to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world. We are currently seeking innovative scientists with experience designing, modeling, and prototyping advanced optical systems for near-to-eye display applications.
Research Scientist, Computational Optics (PhD) Responsibilities:
- Design optical components for next-generation AR/VR displays, with an emphasis on application and development of novel optimization and simulation methods. This will involve formulating optical design as a large scale optimization problem and applying or adapting internal capabilities to find solutions.
- Collaborate with optics researchers and engineers to identify opportunities for novel designs, relevant design constraints, and suitable optimization methods.
- Collaborate with AI researchers to evaluate and scale emerging design methods that address critical needs in AR/VR.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
- Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a PhD degree in Optical Sciences, Physics, Electrical Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
- Proficiency with Python and experience with machine learning frameworks such as Pytorch, Jax, or Tensorflow.
- Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
- General knowledge of optics including imaging, illumination, radiometry and colorimetry, physical and geometric optics, and polarization.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a team environment.
- Experience with mathematical and practical aspects of integrated photonics, optical metamaterials, nanophotonics, semiconductor physics, or similar fields.
- Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences such as OSA, SPIE, IEEE, SIGGRAPH, COSI, and SID.
- Experience with optical simulation algorithms such as FDTD, RCWA, or DGTD, and commercial or open-source simulators such as Lumerical and Meep.
- Demonstrated software engineer experience via an internship, work experience, coding competitions, or widely used contributions in open source repositories (e.g. GitHub).
About Meta:
Meta builds technologies that help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses. When Facebook launched in 2004, it changed the way people connect. Apps like Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp further empowered billions around the world. Now, Meta is moving beyond 2D screens toward immersive experiences like augmented and virtual reality to help build the next evolution in social technology. People who choose to build their careers by building with us at Meta help shape a future that will take us beyond what digital connection makes possible today—beyond the constraints of screens, the limits of distance, and even the rules of physics.
