Come work alongside industry-leading scientists and engineers to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world. Optics & Display Research (O&DR) is seeking an innovative Laser Research Scientist who will be responsible for the research and development of novel laser components for AR and VR display applications. You will lead the effort of exploring new concepts in laser diode technologies for potential use in AR and VR. You will be responsible for working with other teams to provide proof of concept viability and demonstrations to product teams for future commercialization. Successful candidates must be comfortable working in a dynamic, cross-functional team.
Laser Research Scientist Responsibilities:
- Develop novel high-performance laser diode devices in the visible wavelength range, from physical concepts to demonstrating device performance and manufacturability.
- Work across physics fundamentals, epitaxy, device design, fabrication processes, and advanced characterization.
- Design and implement advanced test equipment to characterize laser diodes in a R&D environment.
- Contribute to technology development, internally and through external partners, including, epitaxy of compound semiconductors, optoelectronic device architecture and design, and semiconductor process development.
- Take leadership in identifying technologies, managing internal and external investigations, and selecting technical pathways to support evolving program needs.
- Work with internal teams and external partners to deliver robust processes & devices that meet development roadmap targets.

- PhD degree or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering, Material Science, Physics, or related field.
- 1+ years experience in research and development in semiconductors/optoelectronics.
- 1+ years experience in one of the following areas: laser diode fabrication, laser diode simulation, laser diode test, or characterization.
- Experience in semiconductor technologies, including III-V or III-N material systems (e.g., InGaN, AlInGaP) or a device type including light-emitting diodes (LED) or lasers diodes.
- Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working and communicating cross-functionally in a team environment.
- Experience in modeling device physics, materials science, and device physics (e.g., laser diodes, light emitting diodes).
- Experience with semiconductor epitaxy (e.g., metal-organic chemical vapor deposition, molecular beam epitaxy), semiconductor processing, process/device characterization, test and assembly, reliability and failure analysis.
- Familiar with high-speed optoelectronics.
