Optical Metrology Engineer

Employer

Job Description

At Meta’s Reality Labs Research, our goal is to make world-class consumer virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. Come work alongside industry-leading scientists and engineers to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world. Optics & Display Research (O&DR) is looking for an inventive Optical Metrology Scientist, who will conceive, develop and implement ambitious early-research-stage, cutting-edge optical metrology methods for characterization, performance evaluations of materials, processes, and complex optical devices. You will work with our brightest minds to jointly push the envelope of how optics can be utilized to measure physical properties of our entire food chain of display and sensing components. Your work will be used in the pathfinding stage of our ambitious research projects and eventually transferred to pilot-stage metrology. As a member of the horizontal metrology service you will support numerous research pillars, based on their needs. You will own a programmatic database system used to handle metrology requests and keep track of current and future optical characterization capabilities of O&DR. You will be an individual contributor reporting to the Lab Management, who owns the research-stage optical metrology service.

Optical Metrology Engineer Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement ambitious early-stage research, and cutting-edge optical metrology methods for characterization and performance evaluations of materials, components, and complex optical devices.
  • Implement proof-of-concept hardware prototypes that redefine the state-of-the-art in AR/VR/MR optical metrology.
  • Engage cross-functionally with researchers and engineers to explore innovative concepts that advance the entire pipeline (hardware, software, integration, infrastructure, and applications), and create compelling future AR/VR/MR experiences.
  • Work in optical laboratories, building and executing optical experiments aimed at novel metrology methods.
  • Pass knowledge and modes of operation to lab staff and research-supporting team. Engage in cross-pillar scientific discussions about strategies to extend O&DR metrology capabilities and efficiency.
  • Automatize tests and routines with Python/Labview or similar software.
  • Document and update the capabilities of metrology tools in a shared database used for handling metrology requests.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters or equivalent experience in Optical Sciences, Physics, Engineering or a related field.
  • 5+ years experience with design of experiments, building, and documenting custom optical setups.
  • Experience with a broad range of optics including imaging, holography, scatterometry, illumination, radiometry and photometry, wave optics, diffractive optics and polarization.
  • Experienced in standard tools and methods for measurement system automation at lab level including LabView, MatLab and/or Python.
  • Experience in laboratory work and in setting up high quality and reliable optical measurement systems.
  • Experience in optical components performance metrology, testing, optical characterization, spectroscopy.
  • Familiarity with optical metrology tools such as interferometry or image quality testing (wavefront sensing, MTF and spectroscopy).
  • Experience in optical components performance metrology, testing, optical characterization, and spectroscopy.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD or equivalent experience in Optical Sciences, Physics, Materials, Physical Chemistry or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in applied research and/or product development of advanced optics or photonic systems, including AR/VR.
  • Expertise in digital holography, profilometry, interferometry, distortion measurements, MTF testing, spectrophotometry, wavefront sensing, laser-scanning, surface metrology (electron, atomic force), x-ray diffraction, thin film characterization.
  • Experience developing hardware test solutions for automated data capture and data processing.
  • Proven track record of achieving results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at workshops or conferences (e.g., OSA, SPIE, IEEE, SIGGRAPH, COSI, and SID).
  • Experience developing prototypes and collaborating in a team environment across a diverse set of disciplines including Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, and Optics.
  • Capabilities in optical design tools such as Lumerical, LightTools, Zemax, FRED, or ASAP.
  • Knowledge and experience with color science, colorimetry, and visual optics.
  • Proven experience in database design and/or programming
  • Experience solving technical problems while leading major initiatives.
  • Adept at working in a fast-paced, ambiguous, and flexible environment.
