Position Description:

The Associate Vice President, Innovative Curriculum oversees a broad portfolio of responsibilities and provides strategic direction and leadership aligned with the Academic Plan, Strategy 2026 and Vision 2030 for Curriculum Innovation; is devoted to the exploration, incubation, and advancement of innovative curriculum design and development through modular, competency/skills based design and development of specialty curriculum including global learning experiences, and technology enhanced learning experiences including the use of AR/VR and mixed reality simulations. Working closely with the AVP, Program Quality, Development and Integration, the AVP, Teaching & Learning, the Teaching and Learning Exchange (TLX), Deans and the academic leadership team, responds to the evolving post-secondary landscape to ensure GBC is at the forefront in providing innovative learning opportunities.


Key responsibilities:


Leadership In Curriculum Innovation

  • Anticipates and responds to emerging trends to meet the evolving needs of our local, national, and global communities.
  • Will support the institution’s commitment to lifelong learning and access through the development of stackable, digital learning experiences.
  • Creates and acquires innovative, learner-centric digital platform solutions, with the goal of increasing learner access through online; Works closely and collaboratively with the Office of Academic Excellence in the design and development of modular program/curriculum development, academic quality, processes, and policies. Actively participates as a member of the Academic Policy Committee.
  • As required, maintains effective relationships with representatives from provincial bodies, including MCU, Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development, Chief Secretariat of PEQAB, Senior Policy Advisors and representatives from Colleges Ontario, OCQAS, and the Higher Education Quality Council of Ontario (HEQCO).


Curriculum

  • Provides visionary, strategic leadership in the design, development and alignment of comprehensive curriculum to position GBC as a leader in educational delivery.
  • Works with other Academic AVPs to collaborate on efforts to improve the online student experience and support student success initiatives.
  • Actively contributes and collaborates on the design and delivery of international joint programs in support of GBC’s strategic global engagement priorities.


Institutional Success

  • In partnership with the Academic Team, enhances GBC’s national and international reputation as a preeminent teaching and research institution.
  • Working within the Strategic Enrolment Management Framework, develops and implements plans and priorities that expand enrollment access through online education; implements best practices for online, hybrid program delivery and global engagement.
  • In partnership with the Office of Academic Excellence, ensures courses/modules/learning experiences are in compliance with MCU and program-specific accreditation standards.


Tech-Enhanced Learning

  • Provides leadership on design of innovative curriculum particularly for the development of tech-enhanced and adaptive learning curriculum and assessments.
  • Staying abreast of developments in AI and new technology, expands the design and development of simulations, AR/VR for online and hybrid delivery.


Talent Development & Management

  • Manages technical development staff, instructional designers and experts in digital curriculum and simulations.
  • Leads project teams in virtual environments including partners that are geographically distributed.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Educational and Experience Requirements:

  • Master's degree in education, or Curriculum Design or other related discipline.
  • A minimum of 13 years of experience with Innovative Curriculum Development and program planning experience at the post-secondary level is required.
  • Demonstrated record of significant and progressively increasing academic leadership including extensive experience managing people, projects, budgets, and facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience leading the development of technology-enabled curriculum including Augmented (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MR).
  • Demonstrated experience in leading competency-based development.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading the rapid development of Micro-Credentials.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of integrated program simulations.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of global curriculum and international educational frameworks.
  • Prior experience in a unionized environment preferred.

  • Comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of the post-secondary education sector, academic environment, and provincial political landscape as it affects the priorities of post-secondary education, research, and infrastructure funding.
