Research Engineer - Materials & Failure Analysis

Employer

Job Description

At Reality Labs Research (RL-R), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Materials and Failure Analysis (FA) Research Engineer to join our team, whose mission is to create highly flexible and reliable electronic devices with uncompromised performance. We are specifically looking for a candidate with experience in performing FA of integrated electronic devices leveraging novel materials and device designs and improving device reliability through laboratory testing and based upon failure mode root-cause as well as for someone who can work with a team of researchers who are solving the materials, manufacturing and performance needs for a new paradigm of worn devices. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.

Research Engineer - Materials & Failure Analysis Responsibilities:

  • Perform root-cause understanding of failure modes within fabricated integrated electronic devices, based upon novel materials or device designs, following reliability testing and recommend structural, mechanical, or process adjustments and corrective actions targeting improved reliability performance
  • Participate in reliability testing of integrated electronic devices within test and characterization labs, focused on improving electromechanical and environmental stability of devices, and creation of testing reports with results and meaningful datasets, including representing statistical significance, to influence test plans and programs
  • Characterization of a broad range of materials and material stack-ups including flexible electronic materials, elastomers and soft-goods
  • Participate in and drive for improvements within overall reliability testing and materials characterization efforts, including development of new test standards and test infrastructure bring-up, operational and data efficiency improvements, trouble-shooting and maintaining test and characterization equipment
  • Collaborate with research scientists and engineers from broad disciplines to translate complex technology needs into appropriate cross-functional experimental test plans and research directions

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently has a Masters or PhD degree in materials science, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, polymer science, a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 2+ years experience performing FA of microelectronic packages or other integrated electronic devices
  • 2+ years experience performing reliability testing of electronics devices per industry standards (IPC, JEDEC, ASTM or ISO) to characterize and improve performance under mechanical fatigue or environmental accelerated life testing
  • 2+ years hands-on testing experience with various electrical, mechanical and environmental stress testing equipment, including electrical measurements under dynamic strain, tensile testing or damp heat testing
  • 1+ years experience in materials characterization and FA techniques, including SEM/EDS, FIB, 2D & 3D X-ray, optical microscopy, fractography, sample cross-sectioning, XRF, DSC, TGA or DMA

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with materials relevant to flexible electronic devices, such as photopatternable polymeric resins, elastomers, conductors, underfills, encapsulant materials and shielding materials
  • Experience with reliability techniques such as Fault Tree Analysis, Weibull distributions, Six Sigma Methodology, Root-cause analysis, testing towards ASTM, ISO and IPC standards and data reporting software such as JMP
  • Experience balancing internal and external FA and testing experimentation, including a track-record of leveraging external testing labs or establishing new internal testing capabilities such as new equipment or laboratories
  • Thorough understanding of stress, strain, cracking, corrosion, fatigue and related failure mechanisms in electronic devices
  • Experience with a variety of FA projects spanning from component to systems levels, defining root cause of failures and driving towards corrective actions required to mitigate future failures
