We are seeking an innovative Research Scientist with experience in processing optical materials and prototyping novel devices for near-to-eye display applications. As part of the Optics & Display Research (O&DR) team, you will work alongside industry-leading scientists and engineers to develop cutting-edge technology that makes AR and VR pervasive and universal. This is a full-time position requiring an advanced degree in material science, engineering, chemistry, optics, or similar, and a strong background in liquid crystal, polymer, optical film, process fabrication, and innovation.

Research Scientist, Material & Process (PhD) Responsibilities:

  • Lead research, development, and evaluation of materials, formulations, and processes for advanced liquid crystal optical devices.
  • Drive prototyping iterations to meet design specifications and support metrology through closed loop.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional optical/process/mechanical engineers to enhance both component and system performance.
  • Compile device requirements, process flow, roadmaps, and challenges.
  • Conduct critical tolerance & root cause analysis, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with extended teams to identify critical industrial and research partners to develop and scale novel technologies.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining, a Ph.D. degree in Material Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Optical Science, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
  • Currently has, or is in the process of obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience. Degree must be completed prior to joining Meta.
  • Background in liquid crystal, photoalignment, polymer, or optical film.
  • 2+ years of research experience in materials characterization, thin-film processing, surface analysis, UV curing.
  • Hands-on experience in research prototyping.
  • Knowledge in polarization or diffraction optical elements’ work principle and fabrication.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in studying optical components for AR/VR applications (lens, waveguides, etc.).
  • Familiarity with polarization optics and modeling tools, such as LCDMaster, MATLAB, COMSOL, or RCWA, etc.
  • Experience in additive printing, or film lamination.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and knowledge to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and experience to shift priorities to meet business needs and deadlines.
