Optical Scientist, Waveguide Design

Employer

Job Description

At Meta’s Reality Labs Research, our goal is to make world-class consumer virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. Come work alongside industry-leading scientists and engineers to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal. Join the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world. Optics & Display Research (O&DR) is currently seeking scientists with experience designing and modeling advanced optical systems relevant to near-to-eye display applications. Successful candidates must be comfortable working in a dynamic, cross-functional team and have experience in optical system design and innovation.

Optical Scientist, Waveguide Design Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with system architecture teams to develop component and subsystem requirements for next generation near-eye displays.
  • Optical design and modeling of critical component technologies for near-eye display combiners.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners to prototype and verify designs towards size, weight, cost, and performance targets.
  • Design innovative concepts to overcome limitations of existing technologies.
  • Contribute to improvement of design methodologies and workflow.
  • Collaborate with diverse teams and scientists with specialties in Computation, Optics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Process Development, and Integration to identify and develop solutions following best practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree or equivalent experience in the field of Optical Sciences, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience with fundamental optics concepts such as wave optics, geometric optics, diffraction, polarization, coherence, etc.
  • 3+ years experience with electromagnetic modeling and analysis of nanoscale structures, anisotropic materials, films, or holographic elements.
  • Experience in scientific programming and data analysis tools (e.g. MATLAB, Python, etc.).
  • 3+ years experience with multiple optical technologies in the areas such as imaging or illumination systems, light sources, thin films, polarization optics, adaptive optics, or color science.
  • Experience working with process, equipment, or manufacturing partners to drive development cycles of optical systems.
  • Experience working in a cross-group and cross-culture collaboration environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in applied research and/or product development of waveguide-based near-to-eye display systems.
  • Experience with optical design using standard design software such as VirtualLab, FRED, LightTools, Zemax, or CODE V.
  • Experience in conducting research on novel technologies such as metastructures and metamaterials for light manipulation, beam steering, wave propagation, etc.
  • Experience with developing optics for products, design of experiment methodologies, and statistical data analysis methods and software (JMP, MATLAB, Python, etc.).
  • Experience with hands-on laboratory work with optics metrology tools such as interferometers, image quality testers, and polarimeters.
