Title: Electrical Engineer V

Pay Rate: $75 to $85/Hr

Location: Redmond, WA

This is a 12-month contract with possible extension.

Job Description:

  • At Client Reality Labs Research (RL-R), client goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences.
  • During candidates' time at Client, candidates will further the state of the art in ultra-compact high voltage power supplies.

Education/Experience:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience required.
  • 10 plus years of industry experience in hardware design or electrical engineering roles.
  • Experience with schematic capture and PCB layout tools
  • Experience with test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, and function generators.
  • Experience with high voltage safety and safety interlocks

Top 3 Must-Have HARD Skills:

  • Expert in high voltage systems (1000V or greater)
  • Experience with switching power supply design
  • Expert knowledge of high voltage product safety

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Experience in HDI/compact PCB design
  • Able to adapt and respond to changing priorities
  • Experience with regulatory / compliance testing for high voltage systems
  • Experience with simulation tools such as SPICE and Multiphysics packages such as Ansys or COMSOL.

Story Behind the Need - Business Group and Key Projects:

  • The Materials and Devices team is developing novel materials for use in actuator designs.
  • These actuators require high voltages in order to operate.
  • The power supply for this system must be extremely compact, several orders of magnitude smaller than the current state of the art.
  • Client needs someone who is capable of helping client push the limits of what is possible.
  • This candidate should be able to approach this from a first principles perspective, rather than identifying existing guidelines and applying them.

Compelling Story and Candidate Value Proposition:

  • At client, candidates will have access to leading experts in a variety of cross-functional disciplines as well as a host of state-of-the-art tools and equipment.
  • Candidates will be enabled to push the limits of compact high voltage systems, building circuit prototypes demonstrating the current best-in-class performance.

Typical Day in the Role:

  • A typical day includes specifying PCB design guidelines for high voltage systems, including creepage and clearance requirements.
  • Candidates will also identify opportunities for the use of novel materials to improve performance as well as novel processing methods.
  • Candidates will design compact power supply circuits capable of achieving 1 kV DC, then candidates will test and characterize your design to verify it will meet its requirements.

How will performance be measured:

There are four primary areas where performance will be measured:

  • Documentation of high voltage design rules and best practices - the candidate will be expected to document their work.
  • A specific set of documents will be requested, including a document with PCB design guidelines and a final presentation of the work that had been completed during the contract term.
  • Compactness of a PCB design - A design goal for the PCB length / width / height will be provided.
  • Progress toward achieving this goal will be measured.
  • It is expected that the design will be iterated and become smaller over time.
  • Support for technology demonstrators (e.g. Symposium demos) - The team will use both the circuit designed by the candidate, as well as lab equipment (e.g. high voltage power supplies), in technology demonstrators.
  • The candidate will support these efforts. Specific goals for these systems will be decided prior to the delivery of the demo.
  • Support for high voltage safety and interlocks with client lab equipment - The team requires a review of existing high voltage systems in client lab to ensure we are following best practices.
  • The candidate will work with electrical engineers on the team to ensure interlock designs, discharge mechanisms, etc. are all meeting safety standards.

Pay Range: $75 - $85

The specific compensation for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. Our full-time consultants have access to benefits including medical, dental, vision and 401K contributions as well as any other PTO, sick leave, and other benefits mandated by appliable state or localities where you reside or work.
