Description
Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton (NAMRU-D) conducts research on environmental health effects and aerospace medicine, addressing health and performance challenges faced by service members in operational military environments.
What will I be doing?
Under the guidance of a mentor, you will participate in clinical and experimental projects that support human performance research. Research includes pilot spatial disorientation, vestibular and balance function, cognitive effects of varying breathing gases, motion sickness countermeasures, spine health, neurophysiology, vision science, virtual reality in motion environments, research data collection, modeling and simulation research system integration. You will gain significant insight into government research lab operations, applied operational based tasks for warfighter performance, clinical research applications for perceptual modeling and simulation. Additionally, you will learn about proposal authorship, research study design, research data analysis, multidisciplinary, multi-university programs for vestibular/balance research, understand the application of human performance research to address operational needs of the joint fleet, while supporting research in areas that are practicable and pertinent to the United States Navy.

What is the anticipated start date?
NAMRU-D is ready to make an appointment immediately. Exact start date will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate.
What is the length of the appointment?
This ORISE appointment is a full-time, twelve-month internship. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
What are the benefits?
You will receive a stipend to be determined by NAMRU-D. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

About ORISE
This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. Qualifications
Master's degree received or currently pursuing from an accredited Human Physiology and/or Research Psychology program with GPA 3.5+; desire and ability to communicate both written and oral, and collaborate in various scientific environments (hands-on, laboratory, computer based).
Favorable skills:
- Relevant Coursework in Human Anatomy and Physiology, Molecular Biochemistry, Neuroscience, Intercellular Communication, Immunology, Exercise Physiology
- Gaming or Modeling and Simulation in training or research applications
- Virtual/Augmented/Mixed Reality
- EEG
- MATLAB and/or LabView
- Institutional Review Board/Human Research Participant Protection
- Human subject data collection
- Information assurance, HIPAA, Privacy Act
- Human Performance laboratory or similar experience
- Clinical research or patient health care
