Job Description
The Client Device and Services Design Group (DDG) is looking for a highly motivated Design Technologist with a passion for using technology to solve customer problems. You are a systems-oriented thinker, who is happiest when solving highly ambiguous, multi-faceted problems. You will be part of a small and nimble team dedicated to concepting, proving, advancing, and evolving experiences through a range of prototypes and hands-on product work.
UX Design Technologists at Client combine UX Design and engineering expertise into a single discipline, and can develop, prototype, and test innovative UX solutions that push the envelope on front-end engineering, inspiring development teams and leaders to invest in new ideas. You can deliver code on the platform upon which the experience will ship, and you know when doing so is not necessary or practical. You understand the strengths and weaknesses of the delivery platform and can identify opportunities and work creatively within the constraints it imposes.
You will work quickly, choosing the right technology for the task at hand, to flesh out design concepts (interaction, visual and motion). Your work will be used to demonstrate and evaluate UX concepts and be a reference for engineering partners. You will be asked to cleverly hack your way around platform limitations, tinker with concepts, think creatively in code and deliver quickly, iteratively, and collaboratively within a design studio environment.
Responsibilities Include
- Build high-quality, functional prototypes that convey, prove, and advance the vision of future products and applications
- Develop functional prototypes to demonstrate concepts to development teams and senior leadership
- Partner with software and hardware engineering to ensure that interactive techniques and technologies translate through to shipping products and services
- Work creatively through and around perceived limitations and challenges imposed by the delivery platform to create delightful experiences for customers
- Advance design thinking through your knowledge of platform capabilities and limitations as you support the design team and work with partner engineering teams
- Evaluate and document any new creative and/or engineering standards or patterns that could arise from your work
- Work alongside designers and product managers throughout all stages of the production cycle.
- Work quickly with minimal documentation and technical support
Basic Qualifications
- BS in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience
- 6+ years of experience in a game developer or UX prototype role, preferably within a design team in the spatial computing (VR/AR/MR) space
- Deep understanding and fluent usage across a broad spectrum of spatial computing technologies and platforms including Unity/C#, Unreal/C++/Blueprints, etc.
- Experience and passion for developing visually polished, engaging and highly fluid user interfaces
- Strong creative and conceptual thinker
- Strong attention to detail and organization skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work with ambiguity and visualize solutions for emerging concepts
- Unwavering commitment to quality
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of Client Digital Products and smart home Ecosystem
- Experience with the Varjo XR-3 hardware/ecosystem
- History of building prototypes to visualize and advance design thinking
- Proven ability to innovate within and extend current technology through prototypes
- Understanding of broadcast/motion design, color theory, typography, composition, and iconography a plus
- Strong understanding of interaction design and design process
