Principal Research Scientist
Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)
Ph.D. in Computer Science with extensive training in large-scale scientific data and AR/VR/XR/MR technologies. Six (6) years of full-time research experience in immersive facilities, biomedical imaging (such as CT, MRI, and microscopy data), simulation data, and related fields. Track record of directing cross-disciplinary research projects. Minimum of 5 peer-reviewed publications covering the development of visualization techniques for scientific data and utilizing immersive display ecologies for designing systems that support domain science analysis. Track record of methodological or tool innovations, including demonstrated ability to critically evaluate data and methodology and think creatively about study design. Experience in working with GPU clusters.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in teaching and designing course content for VR, visualization, or related fields. 10 peer-reviewed publications including at least 5 lead- or senior-authored papers in related journals such as IEEE TVCG, ACM ToG, Computer Graphics Forum, and conference proceedings such as IEEE VIS, IEEE ISMAR, IEEE VR, EuroVis, and Eurographics. Research experience in deep learning and AI applied to visualization and/or medical imaging. Experience in writing grants. Track record of mentoring scientists.
Brief Description:
The Principal Research Scientist position provides strategic vision, leadership, mentorship, and direction to our diverse group of researchers working on the immersive visual display facilities and technologies (Reality Deck, Silo, and Augment Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) devices) at the Visualization and Virtual Reality Labs, Center for Visual Computing. The primary responsibilities include directing, planning, and evaluating the activities of researchers at all levels, as well as providing design, instruction, and implementation for cutting-edge multi-disciplinary research projects. The incumbent allocates lab time, resources, and interfaces with university administrative personnel accordingly. In this position, they will also be responsible for leading and preparing grant proposals, contributing as a senior or lead author to impactful research publications at the intersection of scientific visualization and immersive technologies, and expanding the missions of the CVC.
Duties:
• Direct, mentor, plan, and evaluate the activities of all levels of researchers including research scientists, postdoctoral associates, research support positions, and research assistants.
• Provide design, instruction, and implementation for innovative multi-disciplinary research projects.
• Senior author or lead author impactful research manuscripts state-of-the-art impactful research at the intersection of scientific visualization and immersive technologies.
• Support graduate and undergraduate courses taught by the core faculty of the lab.
• Lead and prepare grant proposals.
• Allocation of lab time, resources, and interfacing with university administrative personnel.
• Provide a strategic vision for a large research lab.
• Service duties to expand the missions of the CVC, and other duties as assigned.
