The Times has an unparalleled reputation for excellence in visual journalism. We have defined multimedia storytelling for the news industry and established ourselves as the clear leader. Over the past several years, our work with 3D and spatial formats has revealed new and unique opportunities to tell stories that expand our readers’ understanding of the world and help them navigate it.
The New York Times is looking for a creative 3D artist and visual storyteller to join our visual team. You will have the potential to be part of a multiyear partnership that grows from research and experimentation, to regular publishing and optimization, to a long-term reimagining of mixed reality in New York Times journalism.
We are looking first and foremost for design and technical skills to complement our team of engineers, technologists, artists and editors.
You should embrace The Times’ journalistic mission and demonstrate excellence in the conceptualizing, designing and building 3D/VR experiences — including data visualizations, forensic recreations, interactive graphics and conceptual explainers. You should be comfortable exploring and prototyping in experimental immersive formats.
You should also be comfortable with change and able to work well in a collaborative and fast-paced environment, meet tight deadlines and juggle multiple projects.
Newsroom experience is not required, but excellent news judgment and a firm sense of journalistic ethics are both essential.
This role is a temporary position initially expected to last for up to 18 months.
