JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:


We are searching for Software Developers to join our Communications, Information, and Navigations Office at the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University. ARL’s purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC). The position will require the application of software development and content generation skill sets to develop custom features for a Unity3D-based synthetic environment framework. Developed applications are deployed to a number of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) platforms including Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index, Magic Leap, HoloLens, and CAVE immersive displays.

You Will:


  • Design components of industry-related engineering systems by applying knowledge of complex principles, theories, concepts, tools, and techniques
  • Originate 3D experiences built for either VR, AR, Mobile, or web that improve business workflows or communicate content
  • Develop and prototype hardware and software-based solutions for sponsor challenges
  • Define and demonstrate immersive interaction standards
  • Develop new processes for visualizing content using immersive technology
  • Design experiences, interactions, and applications that support effective collaboration within immersive environments
  • Create methodologies for effective integration, visualization, and dissemination of novel 3D data sources
  • Perform systems engineering activities to improve data processes
  • Brief technical solutions to research sponsors
  • Stay current with immersive technology trends
  • Construct engineering and technical documentation
  • Generate and maintain sponsor relationships and expand business areas


This position can be filled as a Level 1 or 2, depending on your education and experience. Typical requirements include a Bachelor’s Degree in an Engineering or Science discipline, Master’s Degree preferred. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level positions.


Required skills/experience areas include:


  • Object oriented programming (C#, C++, or Java)
  • Team-based software development, troubleshooting, and deployment
  • A background in software engineering, systems engineering, human computer interfaces or visualization technologies


Your working location will begin fully on-site, located in either Reston VA or State College, PA. However, the possibility exists for a hybrid of onsite/work-from-home depending on projects supported. This position will require periodic travel to remote locations in support of testing as part of a small team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.
