Job Summary

Ultrasound technologist performs duties directly involved with a variety of technical procedures in the use of ultrasound for the diagnosis of disease or pathology. Must use various ultrasound probes dependent on the type of anatomy being examined. Must become proficient in recognizing cross-sectional anatomy and understanding of related technology. May also perform other related patient care duties.Recognizes the purpose of employment is to prioritize the patient as number one to align performance with the organizations values and goals, achieve the highest level of customer satisfaction; and to put forth the utmost quality as an ultrasound technologist.

Essential Functions

% Time
  • 20%Prepares equipment and scanning area for patient procedures. May transport or escort patients to and from ultrasound area. May perform clerical and technical related duties as it pertains to retrieving previous exams.
  • 20%Positions the transducer probe per protocols of anatomy. Manipulates equipment controls to obtain maximum resolution of ultrasound frequency per protocols and during procedures. Obtains scan in various required angles and positions. Records scans on hard copy cd if need be and presents to the radiologist for approval when applicable.
  • 20%Practices sterile techniques and prevents cross-contamination. Checks equipment, accessories, and supplies. Keeps areas stocked at all times and room clean. Technologist cleans equipment per departmental policy and after each patient use.
  • 20%Cooperates with all personnel in the proper conduct of the department. Maintains ethical relationships. May be requested to assist in the development of techniques for procedures. May assist in the use of a variety of equipment and procedures not routinely employed. Assist others in the department, requests assistance when necessary and demonstrates a team approach to patient care. Assist in developing the skills of students, trainees, or residents. Pediatric experience is a + This position requires rotational holidays, along with weekday call, and weekend call/staffed shift through all staff on a rotational basis.
  • 10%Will be available for rotating call, while also possibly being asked to cover at other facilities within the Mercy Health market. Adheres to work schedule, and schedules PTO time off in accordance to departmental policy. Attends departmental staff meetings and in-services as required. Essential Job Functions
  • Performs duties for any 2 imaging modalities. (ex: XR, CT, MRI) (ex: ARRT, RDMS)
  • Meets any continuing education or clinical requirements as required by regulatory standards
  • Operates equipment, accessories and is knowledgeable in workflows, procedures and processes of the 2 imaging modalities.
  • Selecting appropriate imaging/sequences with consideration given to approved protocols and other factors influencing data acquisition parameters.
  • Obtains patient's clinical history and appropriate lab work ensuring information is documented and available for use by a licensed practitioner. Use of POC device for Lab work.
  • Applies Safety principles with a focus on the 2 imaging modalities to minimize risk to patient, self and others that may affect the patient’s safety, damage the equipment or affect the image quality.
  • Provides radiation protection and other protection specific to the 2 modalities for the patient and others.
  • Verifies patient identification using two patient identifiers and the procedure requested or prescribed by validating the order.
  • When required by either of the 2 modalities, performs venipuncture including starting, maintaining and/or removing intravenous access.
  • When required by either of the 2 modalities, identifies, prepares and/or administers medications/contrast as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.
  • When required by either of the 2 modalities, uses a power injector for the administration of medication with approved vascular access device. Follows manufacturer guidelines regarding infusion rates and pressure.
  • Scheduled for on-call as required

Licensing/Certification

Certification and Registration with ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) or RDMS (Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer) or CNMT (Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist) (required)

Required to be competent in 2 of the following and obtain certification within 12 months:

Bone Densitometry (BD)

Breast Sonography (BS)

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR)

Cardiovascular Interventional Radiography (CV)* grandfathered

Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT)

BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire, must obtain from approved source prior to direct patient care)

State Licensure (preferred, unless required by the state where the job is being performed)

Education

Associate's from an ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists) accredited institute or of an approved Nuclear Medicine Technology program or of an approved School of Ultrasound/Medical Sonography (preferred)

Work Experience

1 year of experience in healthcare environment (preferred)
