Rocket Surgery Virtual Creative Services is an award-winning virtual production team that provides full-service design and production expertise for some of the leading sports, news, and entertainment broadcasters in the world. We develop innovative and unique design for XR/MR media leveraging Ross Voyager (Unreal Engine).We are a team of artists/designers, programmers, and live-production engineers with a collaborative spirit and a drive to constantly improve and outdo ourselves from one project to the next.
We are seeking a talented Unreal Engine Technical Artist with full-time experience with advanced knowledge of virtual production workflows, advanced material construction, lighting systems, general level optimization, and fluency in Blueprints. Experience with real-time VFX for film and broadcast is a huge plus.
Reporting to Manger of VCS and working closely with the VCS/RSVP team, the Senior Technical Artist is responsible for leading the effort to optimize/QC the various Unreal/Voyager projects we deploy for our customers. Upon the contract agreement, the Sr. Technical artist will work together with the team bridging the gap from design to production operation. For use in live production, we employ various workflows that require blueprint logic and other data/control integration. Using Dashboard and Lucid Studio the Sr. Technical Artist helps establish the workflows to be used in production. This person will help establish proper asset management and best practices for the group. An understanding of source control and other could-based file/project management systems is needed.
Experience with Virtual set, Augmented reality, and In-camera VFX for LED with UE is ideal.
A general knowledge of camera/lens calibration for live virtual tracking data is required.
This position is a combination of design and content implementation for real-time rendering as well as live-production execution. Knowledge and or familiarity with virtual productions and Ross Video’s products used to support virtual productions preferred. This position is remote but occasional travel to project sites will be required. The Sr. Technical Artist will be required to travel to support other Rocket Surgery initiatives and major tradeshow demonstrations as needed.

What the job is all about:
Responsible for execution of and/or participation in activities related to virtual design and AR productions, including but not limited to:
- Collaborate with the VCS team to setup production planning
- 2D / 3D design and artwork implementation and testing/optimization
- Programming Blueprint or other logic for control/triggering of UE projects
- Project QC/testing prior to deployment
- Establish/Maintain standards and best practices for team
- Mentor other technical artists on VCS team
- Regular communication and planning with RVS product team -on latest developments- provide regular feedback to help with product roadmap
- Monitor industry trends and technologies, focusing on maintaining our edge with our service capability
- Travel to and from productions as needed
- Participate in trade show planning and execution
- Work with the RSVP Team and Virtual Solutions departments on product roadmaps, development priorities, product direction, and new products – based on industry and customer trends
- Help maintain and support the VCS workflow and back-up priorities.
Who you are:
- Accomplished Unreal Engine technical Artist with 3+ years of experience in game design development or Film/Broadcast production.
- Experience with Voyager, Xperssion, and other Ross hardware/software preferred but not required
- Virtual Production experience desired – thorough understanding of Augmented Reality, Virtual Set, and Mixed -Reality production techniques, especially those using Epic Unreal Engine.
- Understanding of Camera/Lens calibration for virtual production - usage of virtual tracking protocols ie FreeD, Stype, etc.
- Blueprint setup/construction and C++ experience
- Advanced Knowledge of material construction and Lighting techniques in UE
- Experience with 3D design packages ie Cinema 4D, Maya, 3DS, etc
- Familiarity with LED/XR/Mixed-Reality production techniques a huge plus
- Active passport with the ability to travel across Europe, Middle East, and APAC if needed
- Post-secondary degree or trade school diploma or equivalent experience
- Self-starter and quick learner with the ability to work under minimal supervision
- Able to work co-operatively with and across all company departments
- Basic knowledge of Adobe creative suite
- Proficient with MS Office including Excel
- Advanced knowledge of broadcast graphics workflows and standards
- Basic knowledge of IT/networking workflows
- Knowledge of art creation pipelines, asset rendering/exporting/conversion
- Portfolio/website demonstrating technical artistic ability that includes Unreal based work.
- Organized and very detail orientated
- Self-starter and quick learner with the ability to work under minimal supervision
