Job Description

Enovix Corporation

Powering the Technologies of the Future

Technologies of the future—Artificial Intelligence, Edge computing, 5G, Electric Vehicles, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality—all require greater battery energy density. Building and scaling a battery containing a 100% active silicon anode has long been a goal of the battery industry because it dramatically increases energy density and performance. Enovix is the leader in advanced silicon-anode lithium-ion battery development and production. The company's proprietary 3D cell architecture increases energy density and maintains high cycle life. Enovix is building an advanced silicon-anode lithium-ion battery production facility in the U.S. for volume production. The company's initial goal is to provide designers of category-leading mobile devices with a high-energy battery so they can create more innovative and effective portable products. Enovix is also developing its 3D cell technology and production process for the electric vehicle and energy storage markets to help enable widespread utilization of renewable energy.

This is a very exciting time at Enovix! We’re looking for an experienced Materials Scientist to join our awesome and growing team of innovators at our 50,000 sq. ft lithium-ion battery production facility in Fremont, California, where you can help develop future generations of our 3D Silicon™ Lithium-ion Rechargeable Battery. Job Summary:

Enovix is seeking an experienced Materials Scientist to research, develop, and integrate the next generation of separators and other materials for use in our 3D cell architecture.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the qualification process for all materials used in the Enovix 3D cell, including developing qualification procedures, identifying suppliers, coordinating qualification testing, and documenting qualification results.
  • Evaluate new candidate materials for various aspects of the Enovix 3D cell by developing novel materials and/or working with external material suppliers and partners.
  • Improve test methods to rapidly screen materials, understand their interactions with other cell components, and predict full cell performance.
  • Transfer new materials to external suppliers in support of high-volume cell builds.
  • Manage the process integration of the new materials from cell build through cell formation. This includes directly working with the design team, process module owners, technicians, and test engineers, as well as directing appropriate characterization and failure analysis, and then clearly communicating the results to a wider technical audience.
  • Analyze in-line process data, metrology data, and electrical test data for rapid feedback to inform the next round of development.
  • Summarize results in a clear and concise manner and present results and findings to internal and external customers in meetings and conferences.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering with a minimum of 2+ years industry experience.
  • Strongly desired experiences: work with polymeric and/or battery materials, material mechanical characterization and design, work with external suppliers, and scaleup to production.
  • Process development and integration with a track record of successful implementation.
  • Experimental design and data analysis experience with tools like JMP, Tableau, R, Python, or equivalent.
  • Good judgment: the ability to determine appropriate action and mitigate risks, often with insufficient data.
  • Practical nature: being able to differentiate between solutions to problems that can be easily implemented, versus those that teach us something but are not scalable.
  • Demonstrated tolerance of ambiguity; flexibility to adapt to new situations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • The ability to work well with other team members, lead projects to completion, and work independently.
  • Interest in working in a fast-paced start-up environment.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States.
