The Educational Researcher will design empirical studies based on educational experiences and adult learning environments, collecting data, analyzing data, and sharing findings in reports suitable for senior military and government leaders, as well as academic audiences. Research topics will be determined based on institutional interest and under the supervision of the Director of the AUTLC; resultant publications may be jointly authored with appropriate credit.
- Design educational research studies and collect quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods data using learning analytics, behavioral and psychophysiological measurements, and other techniques.
- Manage and analyze data and invoke quality control measures according to protocols determined by the AUTLC and Air University Office of Academic Affairs.
- Support and comply with the Institutional Review Board process and ensure that the highest ethical research standards are consistently followed 100% of the time in a manner that honors the sensitivity and complexity of human-subject’s data.
- Prepare presentations of findings and recommendations that emphasize immediate application to the Air University and AUTLC missions. As requested by the AUTLC, share these findings and recommendations with stakeholders throughout Air University, AETC, the Department of Defense, the multinational forces, and others in venues to include academic colloquia.
- Design studies and assessments in cooperation with Air University Research Task Forces as directed by the Director of the AUTLC. For example, contractor may support the Air University Research ILS Task Force in research design, data collection, data analysis, and communicating results related to augmented and virtual reality technology specific to military learning environments.
- In cooperation with the Learning Analyst, empirically evaluate research activities and share findings with the AUTLC Director, Office of Sponsored Programs, and similar stakeholders.
- Design, develop, manage, and maintain the AUTLC’s internal records management/standardization processes concerning AUTLC research initiatives. Maintain records for audit and reference purposes.
- Research, prepare, present, and participate in meetings, reviews, briefings, and conferences. Research and prepare slides, agendas, minutes, and other program support products using the AUTLC’s software and hardware [note: the AUTLC is currently using Microsoft Office products including Word, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Excel as well as Canvas as the AU Learning Management System (LMS)].
- In a timely manner that honors the urgency and operational impact of the requests, research and prepare background information/papers on issues of scholarly interest to the Air University community as identified by the AUTLC Director.
- Perform project management/process improvement activities, such as creating work breakdown structures/project plans and providing recommendations and implementation on the viability of new technologies/processes for research and faculty development to enhance student learning activities.
- Maintain office records to memorialize and document all activities required to monitor and manage the AUTLC’s mid-and long-term operations supporting this work.
- Research and prepare materials to assist the AUTLC’s support to external and higher headquarters planning.

- Master’s degree (doctoral degree preferred) in a discipline relevant to education, psychology, other social or behavioral sciences, or STEM fields from an accredited institution.
- Graduate-level education must demonstrate the completion of courses specific to research methods (EX: quantitative methods, qualitative methods, mixed methods, measurement and survey development, grounded theory, structural equation modeling, etc.)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to teach adults on topics such as research methods and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
- Experience with augmented and virtual reality equipment, 3D printing, simulations, and other immersive technology used in developing training and education programs through experimental testing using immersive technology is strongly desired.
- This role includes instructional requirements and is public facing.
- Ability to use Microsoft 365 applications (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat Professional) and possess a working knowledge of data collection and analysis software such as SPSS and/or nVivo (qualitative and quantitative data analysis software).
- Experience with data collection from human subjects that led to the publication and/or presentation of findings in a rigorous, peer-reviewed format. Must demonstrate the ability to adhere to appropriate ethical and privacy protocols to securely manage such data (e.g., Institutional Review Board and approvals).
- Must demonstrate high-quality research, writing, and presentation skills that bridge the gap between theory and practice and be able to communicate highly technical research designs, methods, and findings concisely and clearly to diverse audiences.
- Must exhibit exceptional organizational and communication skills and the ability to work independently on multiple concurrent and high-visibility projects under a deadline.
- Must have experience in designing, executing, and sharing findings from human-subjects research while demonstrating impeccable interpersonal skills, personal and professional integrity, and customer service ethos.
