Job Description

As a Hardware System Process Specialist at Facebook Reality Labs, you will lead the system process on upcoming VR products, help drive the overall process and roadmap, and be a part of the teams designing, building, and validating products for future consumer VR experiences. We want people who work well in teams, can brainstorm big ideas, work in new technology areas, thrive in ambiguity, are able to map tradespaces, can drive a concept into a prototype, and help transition prototypes into high-volume consumer product. The Reality Labs Hardware System Process Specialist will lead the system process definition and convergence of complex and novel sub-systems aimed at pushing beyond the state-of-the-art consumer VR systems. These can span new sensing systems, display/optics systems, input devices, mechanical systems, and full VR headsets. The role requires expert technical communication with cross-functional teams across industrial design, hardware engineering, partnerships, supply chain and core technology groups to drive incubation of new technologies from proof of concept through integration into products for mass production. This role requires excellent technical understanding of systems integration, verification and validation, and system engineering processes.Starting with a broad engineering background in electrical, mechanical, optics, semiconductors, or related fields, we’re looking for a systems process specialist who will build and manage the system process implementation. The ideal candidate would have strong systems skills, demonstrated attention to details, previous roles driving system implementation on complex systems, with preference for consumer electronics products.

Systems Engineering Process Specialist Responsibilities:

  • Develop processes to ensure proper documentation at all stages of product development, requirements flow, verification and validation, and interaction between various subsystems
  • Conduct detailed analysis and trade-off studies for complex systems, flowdown analysis and feedback implications
  • Engage with technology project leads, and various component SMEs in creating the overall system architecture platform as the starting point for product execution
  • Ensure interactions between sub-systems are addressed correctly and meeting product requirements
  • Communicate technology and product strategy effectively to both internal and external stakeholders
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams on blank-slate and early-phase prototyping mapping it to strategic and product questions which need to be resolved
  • Ensure the hardware system metrics, KPIs, standards and tools are addressed appropriately and implemented correctly
  • Drive development of system requirements to create new virtual reality experiences, and help advance technology and research roadmap
  • Own system architectures documentation encompassing compute, displays/optics, EE, sensors, calibration, and firmware from initial conception through prototyping, product development, and production ramp
  • Implement the System Engineering V&V and gated processes
  • Build improvements and develop flexible processes to ensure teams have the tools they need to navigate complex technology and product trade-offs during development. This includes processes that drive more robust schedules, documentation, checkpoints and requirements tracing for technology integration, advanced resource planning for technology development, and improved clarity in risk assessment and risk management

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Communication experience working with Product Development engineers, Product Managers and other hardware/software cross-functional teams
  • Experience managing documentation for integrating and delivering one or more of these technologies: displays, optics, silicon, sensors, thermal system
  • Experience with phase gate approach to product development
  • Experience with architecture and systems engineering across electrical, firmware, mechanical, audio and optical systems
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and managing by influence
  • Experience identifying and evangelizing best practices and strategizing playbooks. Systematic approach to problem-solving and a focus on driving continuous improvement in large organizations
  • 10+ years of product experience in electrical, mechanical or optical engineering
  • Experience with system process implementation
  • Experience in rapid prototyping and creating proof of concept models to share ideas and improve architectural decisions

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in managing and documentation of firmware development, mechanical systems, electrical systems, and complex sensing systems
  • Experience in regulated industries such as aerospace, defense, automotive or medical
  • Experience with various sensors and data streams, including IMU, lidar, radar and cameras
  • Experience creating system models to analyze complex systems interfaces and interactions
