We are seeking a hands-on, full-time Research Engineer or Scientist with deep knowledge and interest in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) with a focus on their extensions and industrial application. Our research group works with Siemens’ business units from the early phase of finding opportunities through designing solutions and implementing prototypes as well as government funding agencies to develop cutting edge application prototypes and end solutions. To succeed in this role, we need someone who has the ability to think out of the box, innovate and find sound solutions to customer problems and help us transform industry!


This right person for this role has extensive knowledge and experience in research, design, and implementation of algorithms for video and image analytics as well as proven experience in building applications in Augmented and Virtual Reality. The right candidate has the ability to quickly implement prototypes and show results for business problems.


The Challenge


In this role as a Research Engineer or Scientist, you will:


  • Develop and apply Machine and Deep Learning approaches for Computer Vison to real-world industrial problems.
  • Implement custom AR/VR algorithms and applications to solve industrial use cases.
  • Deploy implemented and optimized solutions to predefined target systems.
  • Research state of the art literature and algorithms.
  • Collaborate with Siemens business units to understand their problem requirements, create and deliver solutions to such problems.
  • Support the acquisition of funds from Siemens business units as well as from public agencies.
  • Maintain and enlarge network with US research institutes and start-ups for acquiring joint projects.
  • Advance the state-of-the-art in the field, including generating patents and publications in top journals and conferences.
  • Present and communicate project results and ideas to internal and external project partners or at conferences.
  • Partner with colleagues to publish scientific papers, generate intellectual property, and apply for grants.


The Candidate


Qualified candidates must have:


  • M.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Research Engineer must have a minimum of 4 years of experience / Research Scientist must have a minimum 8 years of experience demonstrating strong understanding of fundamentals of machine vision and Augmented Reality (acceptable as relevant graduate projects) along with knowledge of state-of-the-art solution approaches and successful demonstration of key responsibilities.
  • Hands-on coding skills and ability to quickly prototype in Python is a must as well as deep experience in object-oriented languages such as C#.
  • Practical experience and proficiency with Machine Learning modeling frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Proven expertise with application development and deployment on several target devices
  • Knowledge of AR/VR application development in game engines such as Unity for head mounted displays e.g. as HoloLens, Oculus, Vive and mobile devices.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a can-do attitude.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize work.
  • Strong collaboration skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.

Extra Qualifications


  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Proven ability to generate and develop new research ideas as demonstrated by a strong publication record and implementation of working system prototypes.
  • Experience building analytics applications using Machine or Deep Learning for the deployment on edge devices.
  • Experience with CAD models, and sensor generated data such as point cloud data.
  • Experience in training algorithms with limited data, specifically semi-supervised/weakly supervised training techniques, experience with deep generative models
