Job Description

We are looking for a Simulation Engineer with a background in robotics to contribute in the development of virtual environments and immersive interfaces for the space domain. This position is related to the Human-Machine Interaction field, which studies how to connect different platforms, applications, devices or robots with humans.


The successful candidate will participate in exciting projects from the European Space Agency and the European Commission in Research & Development such as Space robotics simulations and Astronauts training.


The position is available in the Systems Department, Virtual Environments & Human Machine Interaction (VEHMI) Team.

The candidate will mainly report to the VEHMI Team Lead.


Location: Sint-Stevens-Woluwe (Brussels Area)

Tasks and Responsibilities


  • Development of simulation environments with application in Virtual, Augmented or Mixed Reality (VR/AR/XR)
  • Application of 3D models, textures, rendering, lighting and different gamification algorithms
  • Generation of synthetic datasets from simulation and development of computer vision algorithms
  • Maintenance and connection of robots, force-feedback devices, actuators and sensors
  • Validation of human-machine interactions in relevant environments
  • Support in the elaboration of management inputs including reports, deliverables, presentations or proposals.


Skills and Experience


  • A Master’s or PhD degree in Human-Machine Interfaces, VR/AR/XR, Robotics, Mechatronics, Engineering, Aerospace, Computer Science or equivalent
  • Advanced knowledge in robotics covering kinematics, motion planning, computer vision, automation and control
  • Proven experience developing Extended Reality applications (VR/AR/MR)
  • Experience working with different interaction devices and sensors (e.g. force-feedback, motion capture devices, Leap Motion, RGB-D cameras, LIDAR, VR/AR Headsets)
  • Very good skills under Windows and/or Linux with:Unreal Engine, Unity3D or equivalent
  • ROS, Git
  • Software programming language (e.g. C/C++, C#, Blueprints)
  • Communication protocols (e.g. TCP/IP, HTTP, UDP, sockets)
  • Strength to self-discipline, cope with schedules and deadlines and work ethic
  • Excellent written and spoken English.


Considered as Assets


  • CAD design skills (e.g. Blender, SolidWorks, others) and 3D printing
  • Experience creating or editing multimedia such as videos, music, pictures or logos (e.g. Adobe Suite, others)
  • Knowledge in Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language, Machine Learning, mathematics, electronics or physics engines
  • Knowledge of space robotics and international spaceflight programmes.
