Job Description

Enovix Corporation

Powering the Technologies of the Future

Technologies of the future—Artificial Intelligence, Edge computing, 5G, Electric Vehicles, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality—all require greater battery energy density. Building and scaling a battery containing a 100% active silicon anode has long been a goal of the battery industry because it dramatically increases energy density and performance. Enovix is the leader in advanced silicon-anode lithium-ion battery development and production. The company's proprietary 3D cell architecture increases energy density and maintains high cycle life. Enovix is building an advanced silicon-anode lithium-ion battery production facility in the U.S. for volume production. The company's initial goal is to provide designers of category-leading mobile devices with a high-energy battery so they can create more innovative and effective portable products. Enovix is also developing its 3D cell technology and production process for the electric vehicle and energy storage markets to help enable widespread utilization of renewable energy.

This is a very exciting time at Enovix! We’re looking for an experienced Cathode Materials Scientist to join our awesome and growing team of innovators at our 45,000 sq. ft lithium-ion battery production facility in Fremont, California, for commercialization of our 3D Silicon™ Lithium-ion Rechargeable Battery. Job Summary:

Enovix is seeking a Cathode Materials Scientist/Engineer to research, develop, and integrate the next generation cathode formulations for use in our 3D cell architecture.

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate new candidate materials by developing novel materials and/or working with external material suppliers and partners.
  • Improve test methods to rapidly screen cathodes, understand their interactions with other cell components, and predict full cell performance.
  • Transfer new cathode formulations to external coating vendors to enable high-volume cell builds.
  • Design and optimize new cells that utilize these materials.
  • Manage the process integration of the new designs from cathode coating through cell formation.
  • This includes directly working with the design team, process module owners, technicians, and test engineers, as well as directing appropriate characterization and failure analysis, and then clearly communicating the results to a wider technical audience.
  • Analyze in-line process data, metrology data, and electrical test data for rapid feedback to inform the next round of development.
  • Summarize results in a clear and concise manner and present results and findings to internal and external customers in meetings and conferences.

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field with 2+ years of industry experience working on batteries or a related technology.
  • Demonstrated experience in materials synthesis, structural characterization, and performance correlation.
  • Experience in battery cathode materials research and development is strongly preferred, including cell design, characterization, and electrical testing.
  • Process development and integration with a track record of successful implementation.
  • Experimental design and data analysis experience with tools like JMP, Tableau, R, Python, or equivalent.
  • Good judgment – the ability to determine appropriate action and mitigate risks sometimes with insufficient data.
  • Demonstrated tolerance of ambiguity; flexibility to adapt to new situations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • The ability to work well with other team members, lead projects to completion, and work independently.
  • Interest in working in a fast-paced start-up environment.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States.
