This is a two year limited term appointment. Continuation of employment is contingent upon availability of funds.
The Auburn University Libraries is seeking candidates for the position of Research Technician in the Innovation and Research Commons (I&RC). Reporting to the senior IT Specialist, this position will assist in managing the MakerSpace and the Extended Reality (XR) space of the Innovation & Research Commons by providing training and technical assistance to Auburn University faculty, staff, and students, maintaining equipment and software, and supervising and training student employees.

The typical salary range for this position: $34,000 – $38,000
Essential Functions
Essential job functions include, but are not limited to:
- Provide individual or group training and technical assistance to users for 3D printers, laser cutter, electronics, and other equipment in the MakerSpace.
- Provide individual or group training and technical assistance to users of equipment such as specialized computers and software, virtual reality (VR) headsets and controllers, and other wearables in the Extended Reality (XR) area.
- Maintain equipment in the MakerSpace and Extended Reality (XR) areas by keeping up with routine maintenance, troubleshooting, reporting issues, and ordering necessary parts and expendables.
- Track warranty and service contracts and coordinate service as needed.
- Supervise and train student employees in the MakerSpace and XR areas including safety and technical training.
- Foster new curriculum-related initiatives and ideas for the MakerSpace and XR Space.
- Work with the I&RC Outreach Programs Administrator on MakerSpace and XR online guides, tours, workshops, and instructor-related sessions, including those done with AUL subject librarians.
Minimum Education And Experience

Experience in research and/or lab equipment operations to include 3D printing/scanning, computer programming, or virtual reality.

Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills. Commitment to a high level of
customer service. Experience with 3D printing, programming languages, or virtual & augmented reality. A strong ability to learn and understand technical and design concepts.

Experience working in an academic library or community maker space. Experience supervising and/or training student employees. An associate’s or bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
Working knowledge of or experience in ONE OR MORE of the following areas:
- PC and Mac desktop computers, peripherals, basic troubleshooting.
- Maker hardware and related software for 3D printers, 3D scanners, laser cutting, basic electronics and circuit board design, soldering, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, sewing machines, fiber arts, and textile work.
- Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) hardware; Oculus and Vive, VR/AR development environments; Unity, Blender, 3ds Max, etc.
- Design, statistics, and data visualization software; e.g., Adobe Creative Suite, Autodesk, Excel, R, SPSS, SQL, ArcGIS, Tableau, etc.
- Programming languages; e.g., Python, C, C++, C#, Java, shell scripting, machine language, etc. Engineering software; e.g., SolidWorks, Solid Edge, AutoCAD.
