At Facebook Reality Labs Research (FRLR), our goal is to explore, innovate, and design novel interfaces and hardware systems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Technical Program Manager to join our team, whose mission is creating the future of input and interaction for AR and VR. We are specifically looking for an experienced leader skilled at working on early stage, cross-functional efforts working in partnership with leaders in research, hardware engineering, software engineering, product management, and design. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work across a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities. We look for technical program managers who care deeply about the technologies they work on, who are natural motivators, cross-functional relationship builders, and champions for driving the right level of process to ensure smooth and predictable program execution in a fast-paced innovative environment.

Research Technical Program Manager Responsibilities:

  • Program manage across a complex, cross-functional organization with accountability for driving multiple programs from initial conception, through design and development, to delivery of tested, useable prototypes
  • Work across cross-functional partners (engineering, research, and design) to identify scope, constraints, dependencies, risks, and timelines across programs
  • Contribute to the strategic direction of our work in partnership with research, product management, and cross-functional leadership
  • Proactively identify technical, procedural, legal, logistical, and communications challenges and drive creative solutions to resolve issues and mitigate risks
  • Own communications across internal and external teams, including communication to team leadership. Be able to distill complex topics to both technical and non-technical stakeholders at all levels of the organization

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering field or has equivalent experience
  • 10+ years experience as a program manager, leading complex hardware and/or software development programs
  • Experience taking a role of ownership for schedules and resourcing across multiple inter-disciplinary teams
  • Experience in process definition/improvements, program management, relevant tools
  • Experience in team leadership, decision making, and presenting to groups
  • Experience operating independently, demonstrating creativity, being detail-oriented, and delivering results in a highly organized manner

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience within academic or industry research settings
  • Experience with development of novel, “0-1”, hardware prototypes
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following domains: AR/VR, bio-sensing, HCI, novel materials manufacturing, soft electronics, wearable technologies, soft-goods manufacturing, cognitive science, haptics, AI
